Position description
The Preuss School UC San Diego is seeking qualified Mild/Moderate Learning Specialist teachers to join our applicant pool for anticipated openings in the 2026/2027 school year.
The Preuss School at UC San Diego (http://preuss.ucsd.edu/) is a nationally recognized charter middle and high school dedicated to providing a rigorous college prep education for low-income scholars who will become the first in their families to graduate from college. As a department within UC San Diego Academic Affairs, The Preuss School also serves as a model school to study and develop the best practices in preparation of students of diverse and under-represented backgrounds to access higher education.
Under the supervision of the Principal, The Preuss School teachers will provide quality services to special education scholars grades six (6) through twelve (12), through a commitment to team participation in planning and implementation of student programs including special instruction, co-teaching, tutorial assistance, and a consultation to general education staff. Plan, organize, control, and direct a variety of programs, projects, and activities related to the Special Education program for The Preuss School. Prepare student education plans in consultation with parents and IEP (Individual Education Plan) team members. Act as coordinator of IEP implementation with general education staff. Monitor student progress, participate in review and revision of IEP, as appropriate. Design instructions, both individual and small group, which parallels the general education curriculum. Assist other professional staff in diagnosis of learning disorders, development of planned remediation and evaluation of student progress. Maintain accurate special education records and logs for individual scholar. Collaborate with fellow teachers on planning, professional development, standards-based curriculum, and common assessment designed to contribute to the continuous improvement of instruction at the school. Assure compliance with various laws and regulations applicable to Special Education. Coordinate the program with the school's Advisory Committee, related agencies and the Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) rule. Administer State and District standardized tests in accordance with District and school testing programs.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
- Bachelor's degree.
- Current Education Specialist Instruction Credential (Mild/Moderate), or the same teaching credential from other USA states.
- English Learner (ELA/ELAS/CLAD/BCLAD equivalent), or Cross-cultural, Language and Academic Development (CLAD) Certificate or equivalent authorization from out-of-state.
- Minimum of one year teaching as a Learning Specialist teacher for mild/moderate learning cases.
- Minimum of one year experience in teaching underserved students.
