Preventative Maintenance Technician
Job Description
The Preventative Maintenance Technician performs preventative maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and minor repair activities for mechanical systems within residence halls and associated Student Affairs facilities. Primary responsibilities include maintaining HVAC equipment, pumps, motors, fans, belts, filters, bearings, and related mechanical building systems to improve reliability, efficiency, safety, and equipment lifespan.
This position supports the department’s preventative maintenance program through scheduled inspections, testing, cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, and documentation of building systems. The technician works collaboratively with maintenance shops, project staff, and campus partners to reduce emergency repairs, minimize equipment downtime, and extend the operational life of critical building infrastructure.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience in HVAC, mechanical maintenance, motors, pumps, or related building systems.
- Basic knowledge of preventative maintenance practices and mechanical system operations.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, testing equipment, and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, diagrams, and work instructions.
- Ability to utilize computerized maintenance management systems for work order tracking and documentation.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize assigned preventative maintenance activities.
- Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience performing preventative maintenance in large institutional, commercial, or residential facilities.
- Working knowledge of HVAC systems, motors, pumps, bearings, belts, filters, hydronic systems, and related equipment.
- General knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and building maintenance systems.
- Experience troubleshooting mechanical equipment and identifying developing equipment issues.
- Ability to interpret blueprints, schematics, and equipment specifications.
