Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Manager, Strategic Projects, on a permanent, full-time basis. This position will play a critical role in driving, supporting, and overseeing the portfolio of key projects aligned with the current Te Hiwa - Senior Leadership Team 14+ strategic initiatives. You will navigate complex and ambiguous environments to lead the portfolio of strategic projects aligned with current Te Hiwa initiatives, foster collaboration, deliver change, and drive successful outcomes. The role will also foster key relationships between the Te Hiwa sponsors and project delivery teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the management and delivery of a portfolio of multiple strategic projects simultaneously.
  • Ensure timely delivery, within scope and budget.
  • Provide contestable advice to Te Hiwa on the portfolio of project delivery across the University.
  • Present progress reporting and specific project support to Te Hiwa sponsors.
  • Develop fit for purpose project plans, reports including timelines, milestones, and resource allocation.
  • Monitor project progress, identify potential risks, and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure all projects adhere to university policies and best practices.
  • Scale and nurture a high-performing project team in response to demand for resources, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Provide clear direction, support, and mentorship to team members, encouraging professional growth and development.
  • Manage effective team dynamics and resolve conflicts.
  • Develop a fit for purpose project delivery framework to suit the university setting.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

Key Requirements:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and/or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of the New Zealand university system, current tertiary reforms, and an appreciation of the challenges universities face.
  • Proven ability to lead complex projects, in a dynamic setting and provide direction for staff involved in project activities.
  • A proven track record of being an influencer to mobilise others to support the work programme.
  • Ability to gather, validate, and interpret data from a wide variety of sources, and to develop processes and procedures to ensure consistent quality of the data.
  • A high level of financial literacy.
  • Highly developed relationship management skills with specific experience in engaging with senior academics and senior professional staff.
  • Ability to write clearly and communicate ideas concisely in varying situations and formats for varied audiences.
  • Excellent organisational planning, problem solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Confidence and ability to ensure that project staff deliver on accountability requirements as requested.
  • Knowledge of project frameworks that can be adapted and adopted for our university setting.
  • Ability to regularly work independently utilising discretion and independent judgment over matters of significance in a fast-paced environment.
  • Possess the reasoning, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills necessary to work with teams of various university constituents.
  • An exceptionally high degree of responsibility, creativity and latitude is required.
