The Department of Music at the University of Southampton invites applications for the roles of visiting artist/teacher in

  • Classical piano (with interests in historical piano and/or organ)
  • Jazz/pop saxophone
  • Guitar/singer/singer-songwriting

Visiting teachers earn £55.32/hr on contracts that are renewed according to student demand and Department needs. We expect these posts to involve between 60-120 hours of work per academic year (subject to student demand). An additional 4-6 hours per academic year of mandatory professional development and training will be compensated at a CPD rate of £27.50/hr.

You will be a professional performer and experienced teacher, able to adapt to a collaborative and collegial higher education environment in which students come from many backgrounds. You will have completed, or be about to complete, an advanced degree in music, or be able to demonstrate equivalent professional experience. You will join a vibrant and forward-looking academic community in the Department of Music at Southampton, where we encourage students to expand their horizons by exploring forms of musical expression with which they may not have previously been familiar.

Specific additional requirements:

  • Classical piano: you will be able to teach the Western Art Music piano repertoire from the Classical era to the present at UG and PG level. An interest in making use of, and advocating for, Southampton’s collection of historical pianos (which includes several originals and copies of five and seven-octave fortepianos) would be desirable, as would be the ability to teach organ.
  • Jazz/pop saxophone: you will be a multi-genre session musician with interests and abilities that cross the jazz/pop “divide.” Experience teaching ensembles across a variety of pop and jazz sub-genres would be of advantage.
  • Guitar/singer/songwriting: you will be able to demonstrate your ability to teach across indie-pop, alternative-pop/rock and folk-rock genres. The ability to teach solo performance in the “singer-guitarist" style would be advantageous, as would experience of teaching ensembles across a variety of pop and jazz sub-genres

As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive. We are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We particularly welcome applications from women and/or candidates from ethnic minorities who are currently under-represented in our department.

Informal enquiries can be addressed to Professor Thomas Irvine, Head of Music, at T.A.Irvine@soton.ac.uk

Please note Title upon appointment will be Part Time Lecturer.
