V – Selection methods and evaluation criteria:
V.1. Selection methods: CV Assessment (50%) + Public Hearing (50%) + Approval on Absolute Merit (qualification criterion), with the assessment being awarded, in the CV Assessment and Public Hearing, on a scale of 0 to 100 points.
V.1.1. Should the jury exceptionally decide, in its first meeting, not to apply the Public Hearing selection method, the CV Assessment shall carry a weighting of 100%, followed by Approval on Absolute Merit (qualification criterion).
V.2. Selection criteria, common to the CV Assessment and the Public Hearing: scientific performance and pedagogical skills of the candidates, as well as other activities deemed relevant to the mission of a global university, in accordance with the parameters set out below.
V.2.1. Scientific performance of the candidate in the scientific subarea for which the tender is open, with an assessment of up to 85 points, considering the following evaluation parameters:
V.2.1.1. Scientific and professional background – 10 points: the candidate's research experience in the scientific subarea for which the tender is open.
V.2.1.2. Quality and relevance of scientific output – 35 points: the quality of the research carried out by the candidate will be taken into account; the impact of the published research, as well as the geographical and disciplinary scope of that impact; the recognition of the research by the international scientific community, taking particular account of awards granted by scientific societies, invitations from universities to present research, plenary lectures (keynote lectures) or other prestigious conferences, as well as other distinctions of a similar nature.
V.2.1.3. Contributions to science, the scientific community and engagement with both the university community and the wider society – 25 points: consideration will be given to experience of scientific collaboration on research projects, including the coordination of and/or participation in research teams. Proven experience in securing competitive funding for the development of individual and collaborative research activities. Experience in organising scientific events (conferences, workshops, symposia or similar initiatives) and/or editing scientific publications (journals, edited volumes) in the scientific sub-area for which the competition is open, as well as knowledge transfer. Active participation in scientific societies, notably through holding leadership positions, serving on governing bodies or participating in and coordinating committees.
V.2.1.4. Future scientific perspectives – 15 points: the candidates' ability to produce highly relevant scientific work at the University of Coimbra in the future will be assessed, taking into account, in particular, the potential for internationalisation of the research project submitted. Consideration will be given to the originality, scientific relevance, scope and relevance of the proposal to the scientific sub-area for which the call for applications is open, as well as evidence that the candidate possesses the necessary technical and conceptual skills, the ability to work collaboratively, a vision for interdisciplinary leadership and the capacity to carry out the proposal within the established timeframe.
V.2.2. Pedagogical skills of the candidates, with an assessment of up to 15 points, considering the following evaluation parameters:
V.2.2.1. Supervision and mentoring activities – 10 points: where applicable, the candidate’s previous teaching experience will be assessed, taking into account the academic supervision of work placements and undergraduate projects, as well as master’s dissertations and doctoral theses within their respective areas of specialisation, as well as the modules that candidates have coordinated and taught, taking into account diversity, teaching practice and the student body.
V.2.2.2. Pedagogical materials produced – 5 points: the quality and quantity of the teaching materials produced by the candidate will be assessed, namely pedagogical publications, computer applications and experimental prototypes of a pedagogical nature that the candidate has produced or helped to produce, with due consideration given to their relevance and impact on the university community.
V.2.3. The development by candidates of other activities relevant to the mission of a global university may, where justified, strengthen the assessment of the parameters set out in points V.2.1. and V.2.2., when of a scale that influences the candidates' performance in those areas and the results of such activities are of a quality that warrants such reinforcement.
V.3. Each member of the jury shall assign, in each of the selection methods — CV Assessment and Public Hearing — to each admitted candidate who meets the minimum requirements of absolute merit, a score in accordance with what is defined in V.2., both for the scientific performance and pedagogical skills evaluation parameters.
The partial classification for each of the selection criteria (scientific performance and pedagogical skills) results from the sum of the scores awarded under each of the parameters indicated in V.2.
In both the CV Assessment and the Public Hearing, the overall classification corresponds to the sum of the partial classifications awarded under each of the selection criteria.
The final classification is the weighted average of the overall classification awarded by each member of the jury in each of the selection methods (CV Assessment and Public Hearing).
Candidates are then subject to Approval on Absolute Merit and subsequent ranking under the terms of point VIII of this Notice. Where the Public Hearing does not take place, the final classification shall be that awarded in the CV Assessment, after which candidates shall be subject to Approval on Absolute Merit and subsequent ranking under the terms of point VIII of this Notice.
V.4. All candidates meeting the admission requirements and the minimum requirements of absolute merit shall be subject to the CV Assessment, conducted in accordance with the criteria defined in V.2. However, pursuant to Article 12(6) of the ECIC, only the 5 (five) best-ranked candidates in the CV Assessment shall be admitted to the Public Hearing, if applicable.
V.5. Candidates shall be approved on Absolute Merit if they fulfil, on a qualitative basis, the selection criteria and evaluation parameters set out in point V.2., as well as those who can contribute to the UC's activities at a global level, and those who meet the following minimum requirements:
- i. Be the author or co-author of at least four books or book chapters or articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals in the field of Music Theory and Analysis, including research on musical time and temporality;
- ii. Have experience of supervising at least one research project involving undergraduate or postgraduate students and/or postdoctoral researchers.
A candidate is considered to be able to contribute to the UC's activities at a global level when they have produced and published results that rank among the top 5% most important contributions worldwide to the advancement of knowledge, in the year of publication, in the scientific area(s) for which the tender is open, and robustly indicate that they will maintain that level, or demonstrate strong potential to perform at that level.
Candidates who, at the time of their recruitment, do not have proficiency in both Portuguese and English must immediately commence the respective language learning process, with a view to ensuring their ability to teach in both languages; proficiency in Portuguese and English at level C1 of the CEFR is an indispensable requirement for subsequent approval at the end of the trial period.
VI – Selection process:
VI.1. Jury meetings
VI.1.1. First meeting
In the first meeting, the jury decides on the admission of applications and on whether or not the Public Hearing is to take place, providing justification in the latter case pursuant to Article 29(2) of the RRCPSPICUC.
Also in the first meeting, the jury verifies whether all admitted candidates meet the minimum requirements of absolute merit.
In the event of non-compliance, or partial compliance, with any of the requirements defined in point III of the Notice, the jury decides whether this insufficiency prevents the application from being considered, or whether, having no relevant impact on the evaluation process, the application may nevertheless be admitted.
Should any of the admitted candidates fail to meet the minimum requirements of absolute merit, the jury shall decide to exclude them, refraining from submitting them to the CV Assessment.
Should the jury decide that the Public Hearing is to take place, it shall proceed to the CV Assessment of all candidates admitted to the tender who meet the minimum requirements of absolute merit, and to their ranking under the terms set out in the following point. In the CV Assessment, only merit shall be taken into account and, consequently, the candidates' prior experience in the scientific subarea for which the tender is open shall be valued, in accordance with the selection criteria, weightings and evaluation parameters set out in this Notice (point V.2.), the jury refraining from assessing or valuing the merit and experience of candidates in other areas. The ranking of candidates in the CV Assessment shall follow the methodology defined in point VIII. Only the candidates best placed in the CV Assessment, up to the number of candidates provided for in point V.4. of this Notice, shall be admitted to the Public Hearing, if applicable; all other candidates shall be considered excluded.
Notification of excluded candidates and of candidates admitted to the Public Hearing shall be made by Public Notice, under the terms set out in point IX of this Notice. Candidates shall be notified, with a minimum of five working days' notice, of the date, time and venue of the Public Hearings.
VI.1.2. Second meeting
If the jury has decided that the Public Hearing is to take place, it shall proceed to hear the candidates.
The purpose of the Public Hearing is to allow the jury to clarify and expand upon with the candidates the documentary elements submitted for the tender, assessing them under the selection criteria and evaluation parameters described in point V.2., with the interaction during the hearing also being taken into account. In the Public Hearing, only merit shall be taken into account and, consequently, the candidate's prior experience in the scientific subarea for which the tender is open shall be valued.
The Public Hearing for each candidate shall last a maximum of one hour and may, by decision of the Chair of the jury, be extended by a further half hour. It is the responsibility of the Chair of the jury to conduct the hearing, without prejudice to their decision to allow other members of the jury to interact with the candidate. The hearing shall take place in Portuguese, unless the candidate or any member of the jury does not have proficiency in that language, in which case the Chair of the jury may decide to conduct it in English. Failure to appear at the Public Hearing at the previously scheduled time and venue shall result in exclusion from the tender.
The Public Hearing, if held, shall take place between 2 and 30 November 2026. Should the Public Hearing not be able to take place within this timeframe, the new date shall be announced in the Public Notice confirming that it will be held and indicating the list of candidates admitted and not admitted to the hearing.
Should the jury have decided to dispense with the Public Hearing, it shall proceed to the CV Assessment of the candidates. The CV Assessment shall follow the selection criteria and evaluation parameters described in point V.2. In the CV Assessment, only merit shall be taken into account and, consequently, the candidate's prior experience in the scientific subarea for which the tender is open shall be valued, in accordance with the selection methods and criteria and the evaluation parameters set out in this Notice, the jury refraining from assessing or valuing the merit and experience of the candidate in other areas. The ranking of candidates in the CV Assessment shall follow the methodology defined in point VIII.
Following the final classification of each candidate assigned by each member of the jury, obtained under the terms of point V.3. of this Notice, the jury shall proceed to a qualitative global assessment of the absolute merit of the candidates admitted to this stage of the selection process.
Candidates shall be approved on absolute merit if a majority of the jury members present at the meeting consider, on a reasoned basis, that they fulfil the requirements set out in point V.5. of the Notice, assessed qualitatively; in the vote, each member of the jury must respect the prior ranking they established in their individual assessment and ranking of each candidate.
Finally, the jury shall rank the candidates approved on absolute merit using the methodology defined in point VIII and shall draw up the draft final decision.
VI.1.3. Meeting for the assessment of allegations
Should any candidate exercise their right to submit observations within the scope of the hearing of interested parties, the jury shall hold a meeting to consider the allegations submitted, and the jury's deliberations shall be notified to the candidates under the terms of point IX of this Notice.
VI.1.3.1. Should the jury find the allegations to be well-founded, it shall act in accordance with its deliberations, notifying the candidates accordingly under the terms of point IX.
VI.1.3.2. Should the jury find the allegations to be unfounded, after notification of the candidates under the terms of point IX, it shall submit the process for the Rector's ratification.
VII – Termination of the tender:
The tender shall cease upon the filling of the positions advertised in this Notice, or when they cannot be fully filled due to the absence or insufficiency of candidates approved on absolute merit.
VIII – Ranking and voting procedure:
VIII.1. When the debate on the various candidates has allowed all members of the jury to establish a ranking of the candidates, each member shall present, in a written document to be attached to the minutes, their individual ranking proposal, duly grounded in the selection methods and criteria and the evaluation parameters set out in this Notice. In the various votes, each member of the jury must respect the ranking they presented.
VIII.2. The first vote is intended to determine the candidate to be placed first. If a candidate obtains more than half of the votes, they are placed first. Should this not be the case, all candidates who received zero votes are removed, and the candidate who received at least one vote in the first vote and received the fewest votes is also removed.
Should more than one candidate be tied for last place with at least one vote, a vote shall be held only among those candidates who are tied for last, to decide which to exclude. In this vote, members of the jury vote for the candidate who is lowest in their ranking, and the candidate with the most votes is removed. Should this vote result in a tie between two or more candidates, the Chair of the jury shall decide which candidate is to be excluded.
After this exclusion, the first vote shall be held again, but only with the remaining candidates. The process is repeated until one candidate obtains more than half of the votes and is placed first.
VIII.3. Once the candidate placed first has been withdrawn from the vote, the entire process is repeated for second place, and so on, until a ranked list is obtained with the number of candidates approved in the selection method.
VIII.4. Abstentions are not permitted in jury votes.
VIII.5. Tiebreaker criteria
In the event of a tie in the vote, the Chair of the jury shall apply, successively, the following tiebreaker criteria:
- – sum of the scores awarded by each jury member to the tied candidates under the Scientific Performance criterion;
- – sum of the scores awarded by each jury member to the tied candidates under the Pedagogical Skills criterion.
IX – Notification of candidates:
IX.1. All procedural acts shall be published on the electronic platform for the management of competitive procedures of the University of Coimbra — Apply UC — in the course of the procedure. Candidates shall be notified of the following: the list of admitted and excluded candidates; where the Public Hearing is to take place, the time, venue and identification of the candidates admitted to this selection method, as well as, among these, the identification of candidates to whom the Chair of the jury has granted permission to take part in the hearing by videoconference; the draft final decision of the tender containing the proposed ranking list of selected candidates; decisions on any allegations submitted by candidates; and the final outcome of the tender, following ratification.
IX.2. The notifications provided for in point IX.1. shall be made by Public Notice published on the Apply UC electronic platform and by electronic notification automatically generated by that platform, with the prior consent of the party to be notified, under the terms of Article 112(1)(c) and (d) of the CPA and Article 83 of the RRCPSPICUC, producing their effects under the terms of Article 113 of the CPA, without prejudice to the possibility of using other means provided for in the CPA.
IX.3. Candidates may, if they wish, within 10 working days, submit observations within the scope of the hearing of interested parties regarding the list of admitted and excluded candidates, the draft final decision of the tender and any amendments thereto, under the terms set out in Article 121 of the Portuguese Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA). The time limit begins on the working day following notification of the candidates, under the terms set out in Article 87 of the CPA.
IX.4. The full application process may be consulted by candidates, by prior appointment, requested by e-mail to the address of the Human Resources Management Service: procedimentos.concursais@uc.pt.
