About the Role
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is seeking an experienced scientist to join the Electromagnetic Fields Dosimetry (EMFD) Group within the Radiation Dosimetry Department.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead research and provide expert advice on electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure, particularly radiofrequency technologies such as mobile phones, telecommunications infrastructure and power systems. You will play a key role in shaping UKHSA’s scientific evidence base, supporting public health policy and contributing to national and international standards.
Working closely with government departments, regulators, industry and academic partners, you will lead specialist research projects, respond to complex enquiries, and help ensure that UKHSA continues to provide authoritative advice on EMF exposure and health protection.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and deliver research and advisory projects in experimental and numerical EMF dosimetry.
- Develop and maintain UKHSA guidance and public health advice on EMF exposure.
- Produce scientific reports, literature reviews and peer-reviewed publications.
- Provide expert advice to government, stakeholders, industry and members of the public.
- Support advisory committees and contribute to standards, policy and regulatory development.
- Manage specialist laboratory facilities, measurement equipment and simulation platforms.
- Present research findings at national and international meetings and conferences.
- Represent UKHSA externally and build effective stakeholder relationships.
- Support RCCE emergency response activities and deputise for the Group Leader when required.
The role may involve occasional UK and overseas travel and some out-of-hours working.
About You
Essential
- PhD in a relevant scientific discipline, or equivalent experience in EMF dosimetry, radiation physics, bioelectromagnetics or a related field.
- Significant post-doctoral or equivalent experience conducting independent scientific research.
- Recognised expertise in experimental dosimetry.
- Strong record of scientific publications and technical reports.
- Experience leading complex scientific projects and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent communication skills, including presenting complex scientific evidence to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong analytical and data interpretation skills.
- Experience using scientific data analysis tools and laboratory equipment.
- Full UK driving licence (due to emergency response responsibilities).
- Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Desirable
- Expertise in numerical dosimetry and EMF modelling.
- Experience with specialist EMF measurement equipment and simulation software.
- Knowledge of laboratory health and safety, quality assurance and risk management.
- Understanding of wider health protection and public health issues.
- Emergency response or incident management experience.
