Principal Work, Health and Safety Coordinator
About This Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in advancing health and safety across the Faculty of EAIT. As Principal Work, Health and Safety Coordinator, you will provide strategic support to the Senior Manager, Health, Safety, Wellness and Facilities while leading WHS initiatives across a diverse portfolio of risks and business areas. Working closely with School and Centre Managers, WHS Coordinators, and Lab and Workshop teams, you will drive consistent, best-practice safety outcomes and support the development of effective and compliant work practices.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Workplace Health, Safety and Wellness (HSW): You will lead initiatives that improve workplace health, safety and operational efficiency, while advising stakeholders on WHS responsibilities, management plans and best practice. You will support reporting and risk management activities, including hazard identification and controls, and provide guidance on laboratory and research risk assessments in line with UQ policies and legislation. You will also contribute to and support WHS committees and ensure ongoing compliance with Queensland WHS requirements.
- Workplace Health and Safety Coordinator: Coordinate HSW priorities across the Faculty, ensuring alignment with UQ policies and procedures, while acting as the WHS Coordinator for the Faculty office. You will support inspections, induction, training, and risk management activities, investigate incidents and coordinate audits and inspections to drive continuous safety improvements.
- Facilities: This position is part of a team that manages and coordinates activities for both HSW and Facilities. When required, provide support and assistance to the Facilities Coordinator and Facilities Team.
About You
- Relevant bachelor’s degree with at least 4 years’ experience, or an equivalent combination of education and extensive relevant expertise.
- Formal qualification in health and safety or a related discipline.
- Strong knowledge of WHS principles, practices and legislation, with application across diverse university environments.
- Demonstrated understanding of key hazards including chemicals, equipment, manual handling, occupational hygiene and psychosocial risks.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence a positive safety culture.
- High-level computer skills and ability to quickly learn internal systems.
- Proven ability to interpret legislation, develop policies and procedures, and work independently with sound judgement.
- Ability to lead in challenging situations, work collaboratively, and preferably hold or obtain First Aid certification.
