Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Innovation
The University of Cambridge is consistently ranked among the world's leading universities and is renowned for its record of discovery and innovation. With regional, national, and global reach that attracts the brightest minds, Cambridge's research is remarkable in its breadth, quality, and impact. Situated at the heart of Europe's largest technology cluster, the University has catalysed more than 1,500 high-tech companies. Yet what inspires our 24,000 students and 12,500 staff is not what has already been achieved, but what is possible in the future.
The University now seeks to appoint a Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Innovation), a senior leadership role central to shaping and delivering Cambridge's broad innovation agenda. Reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor, the successful candidate will connect academia, industry, investors, and government to accelerate commercialisation, build vibrant innovation ecosystems, and position Cambridge and the wider city as a global hub for discovery and enterprise.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Innovation) will lead strategic initiatives across commercialisation, ecosystem development, industry engagement, and entrepreneurship. This includes oversight of translational infrastructure, venture capital strategy, innovation space development, and flagship partnerships. The role also involves strengthening the University's presence in regional and global innovation networks, supporting student and academic entrepreneurship, and aligning internal priorities across Colleges and University subsidiaries.
Candidates will be recognised leaders in the academic, innovation, or ideally both communities, with a track record of delivering measurable impact through ecosystem development, academic-industry partnerships, and strategic collaboration. They will bring visionary leadership, action-oriented delivery, and the ability to navigate the unique structure of a collegiate university. An understanding of the external innovation environment and Cambridge's pivotal role within it is essential.
Applications are invited from individuals with significant experience in innovation leadership, policy engagement, and infrastructure development. A strong academic background, including a PhD/ equivalent, and direct involvement in venture funding or translational activity are desirable.
