About the role
Imperial College London and the University of Cumbria have entered into a partnership to form the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine (PCSM), based at the University of Cumbria at the Carlisle Fusehill street campus.
Professional Development Tutors (PDTs) will each have a tutorial group of approximately ten medical students. The PDT will support each student to realise their academic, personal, and professional aspirations while in medical school, and during their professional practice.
The PDTs will support students to build professional practice in Cumbria, as well as engaging them in the needs of the local healthcare community. PCSM aspires to motivate students to stay and practise in Cumbria should they wish to, and PDTs will help facilitate early student career engagement with the local healthcare community.
What you would be doing
- Promote the development of your tutorial group by holding learner-centred conversations, drawing on adult learning principles and coaching approaches.
- Monitor students’ academic and clinical progress through the programme, supporting them to improve their performance and celebrating their achievements.
- Support the students in developing and sustaining their professional collaboration with the local healthcare community, preparing them to practise in the local NHS.
- Proactively monitor and support their wellbeing, discussing day to day issues but signposting more complex needs to relevant wellbeing, disability or finance support services.
What we are looking for
- A primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) full GMC registration and Membership of the relevant Royal College.
- Clinically active, working as a Consultant, General Practitioner or SAS doctor in the Cumbria region.
- Experience of coaching, mentoring or otherwise supporting the development of junior colleagues
- An open and personable disposition with the ability to build rapport with students
- Ability to role-model the professional values and behaviours expected of medical professionals
What we can offer you
- A unique opportunity to make a substantial contribution to a major strategic project for both Imperial and the University of Cumbria.
- The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution
- Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year (pro rata) and generous pension schemes)
- Be part of a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources designed to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
