Offer Description
Journalism Program
Northwestern University in Qatar seeks an outstanding colleague for a full-time, open-rank faculty appointment in Journalistic Writing and Reporting, to be appointed in the Journalism and Strategic Communication Program. We welcome scholars with demonstrated experience in the production of professional journalism content across platforms and university-level journalism education, and with a robust record of journalistic production and/or research of their own. Preference is for candidates with a Ph.D. in a relevant field and with a research/publication record focusing on the Global South. Candidates are expected to have linguistic competence and field experience in their area of scholarship.
In addition to a demonstrated research record commensurate with rank, or a highly promising research trajectory for candidates with a recent PhD, applicants should show competence in working with global communities, a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring, and dedication to institutional service and shared governance. Candidates are expected to contribute to both undergraduate and future graduate education and program development. Teaching expectations include two courses per semester, which may include core disciplinary courses, elective courses that speak to their research field, as well as contribution to NU-Q’s broader curricular needs. This could include the required “Ways of Knowing” course, the Doha Seminar honors course, graduate seminars, executive education classes, or courses qualifying for our university’s growing number of interdisciplinary minors, such as Africana Studies, AI and Media Studies, Film and Design, Media and Politics, Middle East Studies, and Strategic Communication. There are also opportunities to collaborate with NU-Q’s Institute for Advanced Study of the Global South, Artificial Intelligence and Media Lab, and Media Majlis Museum.
NU-Q is a community of evidence-based storytellers in the Global South. We are a globally embedded institution, being one of three campuses (Chicago, Doha, Evanston) and twelve schools of Northwestern University, and one of several partner universities in the Qatar Foundation’s Education City in Doha, Qatar. Guided by core values of excellence, collaboration, community, and sustainability, our mission is to mentor and educate students to become creative, ethical, and impactful communicators across cultural and national boundaries. We are committed to excellence in research and teaching, a vibrant student life, and high-level undergraduate student research and media making, particularly on the Global South. Located at the confluence of continents, NU-Q is a diverse global community with approximately 500 students from around 60 countries.
NU-Q provides competitive compensation and benefits. The medium of instruction is English, but proficiency in Arabic or another regional language is an advantage at NU-Q. Candidates with experience in US higher education as well as in the Arab region are particularly encouraged to apply. Northwestern University in Qatar is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
