Expected skills

Applicants must show a strong interest in teaching as well as a high-level scientific record in accordance with UGA’s ambitions. They must identify with UGA’s values, that is, being open to the world, emphasising ethics and scientific integrity, showing an interest in teamwork and being committed to the community. They should also have a sense of responsibility, in particular with regard to environmental and social issues.

Context and educational objectives

The recruited University Professor will join the Mechanics and Physics team at the PhITEM (Physics, Engineering, Earth, Environment, Mechanics) Department.

The successful candidate must have a solid teaching and research experience, as well as a strong background, in Fluid Mechanics or Physics of Fluids.

They will be responsible for several courses/tutorials/practical classes within the PhITEM department at Université Grenoble Alpes, at Bachelor's and Master's level. They may be required to teach various types of courses at all levels in Fluid Mechanics and possibly Physics, depending on their profile. Expertise in Heat Transfer would be an asset given the needs of our programmes. Although not mandatory, knowledge of numerical methods in fluid mechanics would be appreciated.

The successful candidate will play an important role in coordinating and developing courses, as well as promoting them. Finally, they will have significant teaching and administrative responsibilities (head of year or major at the bachelor's or master's level). Experience in taking on responsibility is expected.

Research project and scientific impact

Turbulence is a fundamental research topic at LEGI (Laboratory of Geophysical and Industrial Flows) in its various aspects: fundamental approaches, numerical modeling, and applications.

The recruited professor will develop and lead research activities related to turbulence within the EDT (two-phase flows and turbulence) team. This research must be consistent with existing research topics at LEGI and propose developments towards new research areas or innovative statistical analysis tools (related to AI or data science, for example). This research may naturally involve interactions with other teams in the laboratory.

The research profile concerns sections 60 and 28 of the CNU (French National University Council). The project proposed by the successful candidate must address fundamental questions in mechanics or statistical and nonlinear physics, and may also address more application-oriented modeling problems.

The successful candidate will be expected to propose research activities based largely on experimentation and using the experimental facilities of LEGI or its preferred partners (wind tunnel, hydraulic flume, wave flume, Coriolis platform, cryogenic facilities, etc.).

This research should promote the development of internal and external collaborations with other laboratories and research centers on site, as well as at the national and international levels.

Among the topics currently being developed at LEGI are:

  • Turbulence developed at high Reynolds numbers. This includes turbulence in cryogenic fluids, particularly superfluids, as part of long-standing collaborations with Institut Néel and the Low Temperature Department of Grenoble CEA.
  • Wall turbulence and its control, turbulent wakes, etc.
  • Two-phase turbulent flows with dispersed phases (bubbles, solid particles, droplets) or cavitating flows.
  • Turbulence in geophysical flows and wave turbulence.

Information for candidates

  • Université Grenoble Alpes recruits on the basis of skills and makes use of all talents. It encourages applicants with disabilities to apply for teaching and research positions.
  • Senior lecturers and professors are required to reside at the place where they perform their duties (Art. 5 of Decree No. 84-431 of June 6, 1984).
  • HRS4R certified and committed to an OTM-R (Open, Transparent, and Merit-based Recruitment) approach, the University of Grenoble Alpes recruits on the merits of candidates and in accordance with a transparent procedure.
