Professor in Human Geography

The Department of Geography is recognized for its excellence in teaching and research in the fields of human and physical geography, with an interdisciplinary approach and a strong focus on geospatial sciences and the environment. Located in the new UdeM science complex, the department includes first-rate research infrastructures, such as the remote sensing and geographic information systems laboratories.

The successful candidate will conduct interdisciplinary research using a variety of methods. They will contribute to teaching by training the next generation of students in geography and strengthening students' critical thinking. Their scientific and public outreach will promote the dissemination of knowledge and dialogue with the academic community and communities of practice in Quebec, Canada, and internationally.

Day-to-day responsibilities

Through your undergraduate and graduate-level teaching, and your research activities, you will contribute to the faculty’s pursuit of excellence. Furthermore, you will promote your discipline and actively participate in the daily activities of a renowned institution. As such, you will:

  • Develop a high-level research program integrating innovative approaches in the study of the environment in human geography. You could work, among other things, on the study of social-ecological transformations, political ecology, climate change, environmental justice and/or the geography of risks and infrastructures.
  • Teach at all three levels and actively participate in maintaining the high standards of our program, through the implementation of various pedagogical strategies. You will also supervise graduate students;
  • Contribute to the functioning and development of the department, faculty and institution by participating in committees and taking part in academic and social activities;
  • Participate in activities to promote the discipline, including publications, conferences, and other initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Have a PhD in geography or a related discipline. Applications from people who are in the final stages of thesis writing will also be considered;
  • Have an excellent publication record in human geography;
  • Demonstrate an ability to provide high-quality university teaching and potential for supervising graduate students;
  • Demonstrate potential to develop internal, national and international collaborations.
  • Have adequate proficiency of the French language or be committed to learning it once hired, through the Université de Montréal’s French language support program, in accordance with the Université de Montréal language policy.
