Professor in Multiphysical Design and Optimization

Technical University of Denmark - Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering

Location:Lyngby - Denmark
Salary:Based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations
Hours:Full Time
Contract Type:Permanent

Placed On: 16th December 2025
Closes: 1st February 2026

DTU Civil and Mechanical Engineering at Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as Professor in Multiphysical Design and Optimization. The professor will be affiliated to the Section for Solid Mechanics.

The Section for Solid Mechanics conducts research and teaching on the highest international level within the fields of structural mechanics and materials mechanics, vibrations, and their active control, as well as machine elements and design optimization. The section has a scientific staff of about 25 people and 20 PhD students. The research rests on systematic design of numerical, and experimental investigations of phenomena that are most often highly interdisciplinary and span many length and time scales.

The professor’s research should broadly address the design and optimization of multiphysical systems, with a particular emphasis on high-performance computing methods. This includes structural design of fluidic, thermal, microwave, and acoustic devices, aiming for high efficiency and robustness in complex engineering applications. The work should support frontier technical solutions in sectors such as medico, biomechanics, and energy, where the department is actively involved in numerous projects.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate a strong track record in developing and applying advanced computational methods to optimize the performance of multiphysical systems, and to contribute to the strategic development of the section’s research and teaching activities.

Responsibilities and qualifications

The professor will have a leading role within the Department’s research in computational design optimization. The research must rest on a highly interdisciplinary approach, and it must relate to relevant theoretical and experimental investigations.

In addition, the professor will be expected to undertake the responsibility of representing and advancing the Department’s engagement in the university’s high-performance computing capabilities. This includes building collaboration across research groups to develop HPC resources, contributing to strategic initiatives related to computational infrastructure, and ensuring that the Department remains at the forefront of simulation-driven research within optimization.

It is the goal that the professor will strengthen research and innovation efforts within the research field at the Department by generating new research projects that involve other faculty members within the research group. Research activities are also expected to be conducted in cooperation with relevant groups at the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, and more broadly at Technical University of Denmark as well as abroad. Hence, the successful candidate must demonstrate a proven track record of participating in interdisciplinary research activities, and in attracting and managing research projects, also in close collaboration with industry.

The professor must be an internationally acknowledged expert in the research field of multi-disciplinary design and optimization and have significant teaching experience on all university levels from the BSc level to the PhD level. The successful candidate must be an experienced self-driven scientist, with a keen eye for new developments in the general research field.

The professor must have a proven track record within several of the following research fields:

  • Structural and mechanical design
  • Computational methods for design optimization
  • Multiphysical modelling
  • Acoustic systems
  • High Performance Computing
  • Applications in the medico, biomechanical and energy sectors
