Expected skills:

Applicants must show a strong interest in teaching as well as a high-level scientific record in accordance with UGA’s ambitions. They must identify with UGA’s values, that is, being open to the world, emphasising ethics and scientific integrity, showing an interest in teamwork and being committed to the community. They should also have a sense of responsibility, in particular with regard to environmental and social issues.

Context and educational objectives:

Educational expectations

The School of Arts and Humanities – UFR ARSH – includes five Departments of History, Art History and Archaeology, Musicology and Philosophy, Social Geography and an English Office, which offer five bachelor’s degrees (in History, Art History and Archaeology, Musicology, Philosophy and Applied Humanities) and three master's degrees (in History, Art History and Archaeology, and Philosophy). UFR ARSH is part of the Faculty of Humanities, Health, Sport and Societies, which comprises eight departments with which it maintains educational links and develops joint projects.

The person recruited for the position of Professor of Medieval Art History will be able to develop their teaching across the entire medieval period and across both cycles (bachelor’s and master’s degrees in two specialisations: History, Techniques and Theories of Visual Arts and Museums, Exhibitions and Heritage). They will also take part in doctoral training. They will participate in the supervision of master's and doctoral theses on topics related to the historical period covered by this profile. Their teaching will develop an approach to medieval art history that takes into account the theoretical and methodological renewals of the discipline. They will pay particular attention to images and objects in their materiality. An openness to non-European worlds is possible, as is a focus on archaeological issues.

The successful candidate will collaborate within the department with specialists in other periods of art history and colleagues specialising in archaeology. They will engage in the international exchanges that UFR ARSH wishes to develop and will actively participate in educational projects which will be initiated, possibly across UFR ARSH or the H3S faculty.

Research project and scientific impact:

Scientific profile

The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team and will develop cross-disciplinary collaborations within LUHCIE (Laboratoire Universitaire Histoire Cultures Italie Europe) and across UGA, with an intercultural perspective. Their research may cover any period of medieval art history and archaeology and will mainly fall within the laboratory's first area of focus, ‘Writings, objects, forms of communication’. Images and objects may be approached from a variety of perspectives (artistic, material, heritage, archaeological culture, artists' techniques, production context). The candidate will be sensitive to the challenges of historiographical renewal and the theoretical approach of the discipline. In line with the new scientific orientations of LUHCIE, an openness to non-European worlds in a connected history approach would be appreciated.

The successful candidate must be able to attract doctoral and post-doctoral students and contribute to the international reputation of the laboratory. Experience in setting up large-scale projects is required. They will be required to develop relationships with regional, national and international cultural institutions.
