Expected skills:
Applicants must show a strong interest in teaching as well as a high-level scientific record in accordance with UGA’s ambitions. They must identify with UGA’s values, that is, being open to the world, emphasising ethics and scientific integrity, showing an interest in teamwork and being committed to the community. They should also have a sense of responsibility, in particular with regard to environmental and social issues.
Context and educational objectives:
Educational expectations
The School of Arts and Humanities – UFR ARSH – includes five Departments of History, Art History and Archaeology, Musicology and Philosophy, Social Geography and an English Office, which offer five bachelor’s degrees (in History, Art History and Archaeology, Musicology, Philosophy and Applied Humanities) and three master's degrees (in History, Art History and Archaeology, and Philosophy). UFR ARSH is part of the Faculty of Humanities, Health, Sport and Societies, which comprises eight departments with which it maintains educational links and develops joint projects.
The successful candidate will teach musicology to students enrolled in the bachelor’s degree programme in Musicology, as well as those enrolled in the dual bachelor’s degree programme in Physics and Musicology and the Master's degree programme in History, in its history, cultures, politics and international exchanges tracks. No particular period of specialisation is preferred. The successful candidate will be fully involved in setting up a master's degree offering two pathways: a) research in musicology, which will be developed in particular in conjunction with the master's degree in History, Culture, Politics and International Exchange; b) science, which will be an extension of the dual degree and will support the CMI (cursus master en ingénierie) project currently being set up at UFR ARSH. The successful candidate will develop their teaching in musicology (history of music, analysis, musical training, etc.) and must demonstrate a strong appetite for scientific subjects in the sciences, technology, health fields. They will be required to develop teamwork with colleagues in this disciplinary field (e.g., acoustics, computer science, materials physics, engineering, neuroscience, etc.), as well as with colleagues in the history department.
They will be involved in the international exchanges that UFR ARSH wishes to develop and will actively participate in educational projects which will be initiated, possibly across UFR ARSH or the H3S faculty.
Research project and scientific impact:
Scientific profile
The successful candidate's musicology research may take various approaches (history, analysis, aesthetics, theory, performance research, etc.). No particular period of specialisation is preferred. Projects at the intersection of musicology and science (e.g., acoustics, neuroscience, computer science, mathematics or materials physics, etc.) will be appreciated. Their research must fit within one of the four areas of focus of LUHCIE (Laboratoire Universitaire Histoire Culture Italie Europe).
The successful candidate will develop relationships between the research unit and other scientific structures and major institutions in the Grenoble area. They will maintain close collaborations with research units in a scientific discipline within the field of STS (e.g., acoustics, computer science, materials physics, engineering, neuroscience, etc.) in order to design research projects at the intersection of musicology and one of these disciplines.
The successful candidate will be actively involved in promoting musicology research in Grenoble. They will participate in activities and the organisation of scientific events, establishing or strengthening links with regional musical institutions related to their field of expertise.
In line with the research themes of the multidisciplinary team, they will be involved in setting up local, national and international research programmes designed to attract doctoral and postdoctoral students.
