Founded in 1902, UCL Institute of Education has been shaping policy and helping government, organisations and individuals navigate a changing society for the last 120 years.

The department of Education, Practice and Society (EPS) has specialists from a wide variety of disciplines including history, sociology and philosophy who undertake research to support education throughout the life course by contributing to economic, social and political debate as well as development in societies, nationally and internationally.

The work of the department strives to provide solutions to current and emerging pressure points in societies, such as economic change and social injustice, by creating networks and partnerships to support knowledge transfer between education, work and communities.

We are seeking to appoint a Professor (0.2 FTE) with expertise in Comparative Education, with a particular focus on education policy and practice in Chinese societies, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Singapore. The postholder will contribute to research, teaching, and scholarship within the Department of Education, Practice and Society.

The appointee will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision across the Department, and to the supervision of doctoral research students, particularly in areas related to education in Chinese societies. You will play a key role in curriculum development, teaching, the supervision of MA Comparative Education dissertations, while also providing academic and pastoral support to students.

In addition, you will be expected to maintain a strong research profile, apply for external research funding, and contribute to collaborative and cross-regional scholarship in Comparative Education. Expertise that engages with more than one national or regional context – for example, across South, Southeast, or East Asia – would be essential.

For further information on this post, please contact Professor Paul Morris; email: paul.morris@ucl.ac.uk

The successful candidate will have a PhD in any area of Comparative Education which focusses on China or a closely related field. You will have proven track record of teaching successfully at higher education level, working with students from diverse contexts and cultural backgrounds, including pastoral support.

In addition, you will demonstrate a proven and sustained track record of publishing high‑quality research on Education in China, as well as a strong history of leading education or subject‑level projects and initiatives. This should include successfully securing research funding and bids related to Education in China
