Professor of Kidney Transplantation
Kidney transplantation as a treatment for end-stage renal disease was designated as a priority by the Board of Directors of Amsterdam UMC at the end of 2023. As a PhD-graduated internist-nephrologist, you will strengthen and lead the kidney transplantation group within the nephrology department, primarily in the field of scientific research. You will collaborate with other groups within the departments, with collaborating dialysis centers, and other specialties across both Amsterdam UMC locations, many of which are internationally recognized for their research expertise.
In addition, you will provide direction for innovative developments in kidney transplantation and make a stimulating contribution to education and training. You will teach bachelor’s and master’s students on kidney transplantation at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).
Scientific research is embedded in the research institutes of Amsterdam UMC, particularly Amsterdam Cardiovascular Research (ACS), Amsterdam Institute for Infection and Immunity (AI&I), and Amsterdam Public Health (APH). With a focus on translational research within the department, there are strong ties with the Departments of Experimental Immunology, Internal Medicine – Vascular Medicine, Pediatrics – Pediatric Nephrology, and Pathology – Nephropathology. Currently, the following main research areas are covered:
- Tissue immunity: immune phenotyping of rejections, viral infections, and chronic damage.
- Multidisciplinary, data-driven research to improve/optimize diagnostics, including artificial intelligence in histological research.
- Biomarker research, including functional biomarkers/models such as organoids.
Requirements: You are a PhD-graduated internist-nephrologist with extensive experience in kidney transplantation, both in clinical patient care as well as in scientific research. You have an excellent track record as a scientific researcher, as demonstrated by international publications and successful grant acquisition. You have extensive experience in conducting clinical and translational research and leading multicenter consortia. Based on your scientific achievements, you are eligible to be appointed as a professor at the University of Amsterdam. You have a collaborative personality, enabling you to integrate fully into the kidney transplantation group and other sections within the Department of Internal Medicine – Nephrology at Amsterdam UMC. You are proficient in Dutch, or you can acquire proficiency within six months after starting the position.
Conditions of employment: Classification in salary scale H/MS: €12,225 to €15,087 gross for full-time employment. In addition, you will receive an 8.3% year-end bonus. Pension accrual with the ABP, of which we pay 70% of the premium. Public transportation reimbursement for distances of 7 km or more (one-way), or €0.18 per km for private transport (up to 40 km one-way). Prefer walking or cycling? Take advantage of our excellent bike scheme, receiving €0.18 per km.
Department: Nephrology is a key area within the Department of Internal Medicine at Amsterdam UMC, focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases and kidney replacement therapies, particularly kidney transplantation. As a professor, you will report to the head of the Internal Medicine – Nephrology department. In the context of the alliance between the locations AMC and VUmc, the nephrology and kidney disease departments from both locations have merged into one department, with the primary location being AMC (Meibergdreef, Amsterdam). The nephrology clinic and outpatient clinic are also located there. In 2025, a research department will be developed at the AMC location, in collaboration with other departments within Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. This facility will provide dedicated research space for nephrology, including offices, workstations, and shared research facilities (such as specialized measurement equipment, centrifuges, and temporary freezers).
