Professor of Practice of Sustainability Accounting (0.2-0.4 FTE)

Job Description

The board of the Faculty of Economics and Business wishes to appoint a Professor of Practice of Sustainability Accounting. The Professor of Practice will be appointed in the Department of Accounting and Auditing in the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Groningen. The Professor of Practice will work closely with the professors responsible for education in Bachelor, (executive) Master, and executive programs, research, and societal impact with regards to Sustainability Accounting.

The Department of Accounting and Auditing focuses on management accounting and control; internal control over accounting information systems; corporate governance and law; corporate reporting (financial and non-financial); and auditing and assurance.

The area of expertise of the Professor of Practice includes the practice of sustainability accounting and reporting (which may also include assurance over sustainability reporting). In addition, the professor connects and integrates accounting, control, governance, and auditing specifically from the perspective of their value for Sustainability Accounting and, conversely, the impact of Sustainability Accounting on these areas. The Professor of Practice focuses on the department's teaching, business development, and practice oriented research in the field of Sustainability Accounting and within FEB's strategic theme ‘Future Prosperity & Sustainability’ (Strategic Plan 2021-2026).

Because education and research in the Department of Accounting and Auditing are to a certain extent professional- and practice-oriented, the Faculty of Economics and Business considers it important that its faculty represents Professors of Practice in main areas of accountancy. The Professor of Practice forms a bridge between science and practice and is a knowledge authority in the Dutch market of Sustainability Accounting. The Professor of Practice is expected to maintain a close relationship with the Dutch and international professional field and oversight bodies and to have a key role in the further business development of the range of (executive) education, in knowledge exchange and research, and in the relevant public debate.

Responsibilities and Duties

The position encompasses the regular duties of a Professor of Practice in the areas of teaching, research, and education development.

Education

The Professor of Practice is expected to contribute to education in the field of accounting, controlling, governance, and auditing in Bachelor’s, Master's, and (especially) executive programs (including Executive Masters). In this regard, the professor has an important role to play in initiating, developing, and implementing and business development of education in which students are introduced to the value and contribution of Sustainability Accounting for their daily practice.

Research

The Professor of Practice conducts applied research in the field of Sustainability Accounting with a Dutch focus. The Professor of Practice facilitates existing research projects of the Department of Accounting and Auditing.

The duties thus include:

  • Contributing to and initiating, developing, and implementing education in the area of Sustainability Accounting at the level of Bachelor, Master, (and more specifically) Executive Master and other executive programs.
  • Initiate research collaborations and raise external funds with professional practice to enable research in accounting, controlling, governance, auditing—and sustainability accounting more specifically—within the department and the faculty.
  • Contributing to the (Dutch) reputation and societal network of the University of Groningen with regard to Sustainability Accounting.
  • Connecting and driving knowledge exchange between science and the Dutch practice with regard to research, education, and the public debate in the area of Sustainability Accounting.

Requirements

The Professor of Practice has a proven track record in and in-depth experience with regards to Sustainability Accounting in the Netherlands. The Professor of Practice is able to apply this knowledge and experience in education, business development, and research.

The candidate has:

  • A PhD in the area of accounting, controlling, reporting, or auditing, preferable with a focus on sustainability accounting, and ideally at least 5 years of post-PhD experience.
  • Excellent teaching abilities and experience with curriculum and program development—including business development—in the area of sustainability accounting, especially in executive education.
  • An enduring involvement in applied, practice-oriented research in the area of sustainability accounting, shown by a strong track record of sound practice oriented national and international publications.
  • A clear and sound vision on the relevance of (executive) education in sustainability accounting in a fast-changing professional working environment and society.
  • Demonstrable management and business development qualities, a collegial attitude, and excellent communication skills.
  • A strong track record, expertise (such as a professional qualification), and eminence within their own Dutch professional network in the area of sustainability accounting, and a demonstrated willingness to involve this network into curricula, business development, and research.

Conditions of Employment

The Professor of Practice is a parttime position (0.2-0.4 FTE). We offer a salary depending on qualifications and work experience starting from € 7,202 (Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) to a maximum of € 10,441 gross salary per month for a full-time position, excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. Favorable tax treatment may apply to Non-Dutch applicants.
