Professorship in Private Law with a Focus on Property Law 100 %

Start of employment 1 August 2028 or upon agreement, permanent employment

We are seeking a candidate with an outstanding academic track record in Swiss private law, specifically with expertise in relation to the Civil Code, who is able to carry out research in, and to teach, Swiss property law (real property law, including land registry law, and movable property law), notarial law (certification law), and at least one other area of the Civil Code.

This position is advertised as open rank. Proof of qualification should be provided in the form of outstanding academic achievement (an above-average dissertation, quality, quantity and innovativeness of publications, offers for appointment, or awards). Candidates applying for a full professorship, or an associate professorship must demonstrate completion or near-completion of a habilitation thesis, or a comparable achievement.

The successful candidate shall teach and be responsible for examinations in the core areas of Swiss private law and shall offer advanced courses at master's level in the field of civil law, in particular property law and notarial law, and demonstrate both excellent teaching skills and a minimum level of teaching experience.

Applicants must have a strong network both nationally and internationally in academia and practice and must be able to publish and teach in German and English. Good knowledge of other languages, especially French, is also desirable.

The successful candidate is also expected to be able to supervise staff members and support and promote young academics as well as to perform the usual tasks of academic, faculty-related and university-related self-administration.

Finally, the Faculty of Law is active in the field of continuing education and expects its members to actively contribute within the scope of their professional expertise.

The University of Zurich strives to increase the proportion of under-represented groups – in particular women – in its research and teaching staff, and therefore explicitly encourages applications from such candidates.

Further information is available here.

Please submit your application documents by 22 April 2026.
