This objective is pursued, among other things, through the project “Financial and Corporate Research from a Long-Term Perspective: Digitization of Historical Collections of German Financial Market and Corporate Data”, funded by the Academy of the Sciences and Literature | Mainz and running from 2025 – 2042. The academy professorship advertised here is part of this project. SAFE brings together researchers from the fields of economics, law, and political science.

As part of a joint appointment process, SAFE and the Faculty of Economics and Business at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main are seeking to fill the following position in civil servant or employee status at the earliest possible date:

Professorship (W1 with Tenure Track) in Financial History and Data Science

This is a tenure-track position for an initial six-year term. If tenure is approved at the end of the term, the position will be made permanent and promotion to the rank of Full Professor (W2) will be granted. This position is open to individuals in the early stages of their academic career. A key responsibility of the successful candidate will be to lead and further develop the academy project in the medium to long term.

We are looking for an economist with a strong focus on excellent research in financial and economic history. The candidate should have relevant expertise in the application and development of modern methods in data science and machine learning, especially with unstructured data. A good command of the German language is essential due to the focus of the academy project. Initial experience in acquiring third-party funding and managing projects with external partners is advantageous.

We expect participation in the undergraduate and graduate teaching programs as well as in structured doctoral training. Teaching for doctoral students is conducted in English; BSc or MSc courses may be taught in either German or English. The teaching load is two hours per week per semester.

The prerequisite for appointment is a relevant doctorate in Economics or Business as well as excellent performance in research and teaching, documented by corresponding publications and teaching evaluations. The formal hiring requirements are defined in sections 67, 68, and 70 of the Hessian Higher Education Act (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz).

SAFE and Goethe University are equal opportunity employers, committed to diversity and inclusion. In particular, we are welcoming applications by qualified women and people with a migrant background. At Goethe University, a special emphasis is placed on creating and sustaining a family-friendly work and research environment. Where applicants are otherwise equally qualified, preference is given to candidates with disabilities or equivalent. The same applies to women in fields in which they are under-represented.

To apply, please send a cover letter, CV, a list of publications, an overview of your research and teaching activities as well as transcripts and a selection of recent course evaluations and contact information for professional references (who may be contacted if shortlisted) as a single PDF document (maximum 6 MB) via the online portal at https://berufungsportal.uni-frankfurt.de by 23 November 2025.

If you have any questions, please contact Prof. Dr. Uwe Walz at walz@safe.uni-frankfurt.de. Further information about SAFE: www.safe-frankfurt.de. Further information about the appointment process, the legal framework and data protection: www.professorship-vacancies.uni-frankfurt.de
