Professorship (W3) in Internal Medicine / Nephrology
The Philipps University of Marburg is seeking to fill a Professorship (W3) in Internal Medicine / Nephrology at the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital of Giessen and Marburg GmbH, Marburg site, in the Department of Internal Medicine/Nephrology, for the Wintersemester of 2026/27.
The role of the appointee (m/f/d) is to represent the field of internal medicine in research, teaching, and patient care, with a focus on nephrology. This position includes the directorate of the Clinic and Outpatient Clinic for Internal Medicine/Nephrology at the Centre for Internal Medicine (ZIM). The appointee should be an integrative and dynamic personality with a high level of professional competence and profound knowledge and skills in the entire field of nephrology and kidney transplantation. A prerequisite for the appointment is board-certification in internal medicine, subspeciality nephrology, a postdoctoral scientific qualification (habilitation) or equivalent scientific achievement.
The clinic's inpatient and outpatient care services cover the entire spectrum of nephrology, including autoimmune diseases and vasculitis, rare renal diseases and genetic nephropathies, renal replacement therapies (haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis) and apheresis procedures, and hypertensiology. A particular focus is placed on kidney transplantation at the Marburg Transplant Centre, in close cooperation with paediatric nephrology and transplant surgery and urology. The clinic can use the intensive care resources of the intensive care unit (ZIM). Collaboration with the Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC) Marburg is encouraged.
Internationally visible research achievements are expected as the basis for active participation in the research networks of the Medical Faculty. In particular, the clinic should focus on scientific research in the areas of inflammation/infection and/or tumor research. Participation in programs to support young talents and the Clinician Scientist Program of the Faculty of Medicine is expected.
As part of the professorship, teaching is also expected, including participation in curriculum development, interdisciplinary teaching projects and the implementation of the NKLM (National Competence-Based Learning Objectives Catalogue for Medicine). Didactic skills and several years of teaching experience in training, further education and continuing education in the field of nephrology are provided, as well as a high level of commitment to teaching.
The responsibilities associated with patient care duties and the clinical directorate are governed by a chief physician contract with university hospital Marburg (UKGM GmbH). It is based on the principles of performance-related remuneration and includes fixed and flexible components. Applicants should have leadership skills and knowledge of clinic management, quality management and economic management.
The universities of Giessen and Marburg, together with the Technical University of Central Hesse, have established the Central Hesse Research Campus. Within this framework, the two medical faculties practice a structured collaboration based on coordinated priorities. Accordingly, candidates are expected to be willing to cooperate across universities and departments in campus priorities and profile areas, as well as to participate in collaborative projects. In particular, cross-site, patient-oriented clinical research and participation in joint clinical trials are required.
