Professorship (W3-level) in “Systems Neuroscience”

We are seeking an outstanding, internationally recognized scientist with an excellent track record in the field of modern neuroscience. Candidates should possess a distinctive research profile in current areas of systems neuroscience, for example, the investigation of sensory and neural networks that underlie complex behaviours, and preferably work with an invertebrate model. Candidates are expected to apply state-of-the-art neuroscientific methods, such as optogenetics, chemogenetics, connectomics, electrophysiology, live imaging of neuronal activity, and AI-supported behavioural tracking with a particular emphasis on modern imaging techniques.

The professorship will be based at the Multiscale Imaging Centre (MIC) and the Institute for Neuro- and Behavioural Biology, providing access to a cutting-edge research environment and diverse, high-resolution imaging infrastructure. Collaboration within the Faculty of Biology, the MIC, and the Otto Creutzfeldt Centre for Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience (OCC) is strongly encouraged. Moreover, we expect the candidate to help initiate and/or participate in larger planned research consortia, as well as promote new, interdisciplinary structures. With regard to teaching, the successful candidate will represent the full spectrum of neurobiology. This includes active participation in Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes, and especially in introductory lectures and practical courses that convey the theoretical and experimental foundations of neurobiology.

Furthermore, the candidate is expected to carry out academic self-administrative duties and secure third-party funding. Demonstrated excellence in scientific achievements, substantial funding, and proven didactic skills are prerequisites.

To be eligible for this position, candidates must possess teaching experience and further academic achievements made as a Juniorprofessor (assistant professor), in a habilitation (postdoctoral qualification), as a member of the academic staff of a university or non-university research institute, or in a research position in business, industry, administration or other relevant fields in Germany or abroad.

The University of Münster strongly supports equal opportunity and diversity. We welcome all applicants regardless of sex, nationality, ethnic or social background, religion or worldview, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity. We are committed to creating family-friendly working conditions. We actively encourage applications by women. Women with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered unless these are outweighed by reasons which necessitate the selection of another candidate.

Applications should include a Curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a summary of research interests, a research concept, and an overview of teaching experience with a teaching concept. Additionally, statements on "equal opportunities" and "diversity" are desirable.

All documents should be sent via email in a single PDF file by 5 January 2026 to:
