Meyerhoff Scholars Program The Meyerhoff Scholars Program has been at the forefront of efforts to increase diversity among future leaders in science, engineering and related fields. The UMBC Meyerhoff Program family encompasses over 250 undergraduate scholars at UBMBC and 2,000 alumni across the nation with 300 currently enrolled in graduate and professional programs. The Program is open to prospective undergraduate students of all backgrounds who plan to pursue a PhD or the combined MD-PhD in the sciences or engineering and who are interested in the advancement of minorities in those fields. The program’s success is built on the premise that, among like-minded students who work closely together, positive energy is contagious. By assembling such a high concentration of high-achieving students in a tightly knit learning community, students continually inspire one another to do more and better. The program has been recognized by the National Science Foundation and The New York Times as a national model.

Position Overview:

The Program Coordinator - Junior/Senior Advising coordinates the advising, undergraduate research experiences, and graduate/professional school application process for junior and senior Meyerhoff Scholars at UMBC.

Telework:

Responsibilities:

The Program Coordinator - Junior/Senior Advising coordinates the retention, advising, undergraduate research and graduate placement initiatives for junior and senior Meyerhoff Scholars at UMBC.

  • Provide academic advising for junior and senior Meyerhoff Scholars
  • Mentor and coach junior and senior scholars through the graduate and/or professional school application process
  • Co-facilitate a monthly seminar series, workshops and trainings that support students' personal development, academic success and admission to graduate and professional programs
  • Support unit efforts related to standardized test preparation (GRE and MCAT), research and evaluation, outreach/recruitment, and program development.
  • Serve as a contributing member of the Meyerhoff Academic Review Committee and work closely with the UMBC Advising Community to learn and share campus-wide advising updates, practices and trends
  • Support development and co-facilitate UMBC UNIV courses for Meyerhoff junior and seniors
  • Work collaboratively with a broad spectrum of internal and external partners to support student retention and success
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree and at least two years related experience in education or non-profit settings supporting students Note: A Master's Degree in STEM, counseling, education, social work or related area may be substituted for the two years of required experience.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, writing, analytical, communication and presentation skills/abilities
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective professional relationships
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse groups
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, prioritize and complete multiple tasks with competing deadlines
  • Occasional/seasonal evening and weekend hours and overnight travel required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree
  • Three or more years experience in higher education or non-profit setting supporting students from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience in advising, counseling and/or collegiate academic success initiatives
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) degree, background and/or experience working with diverse students in STEM disciplines

Salary:

Salary: $54,500 to $61,500 depending on qualifications and experience. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Hours:

Full-time. Occasional/seasonal evening and weekend hours and overnight travel required.
