Risk Management and Audit Services (RMAS) is a department within Harvard University’s Financial Administration that assists University management in identifying, managing, and mitigating risk by providingĀ the following services:Ā Financial, Operational, Compliance and Construction andĀ Information TechnologyĀ Audit,Ā Enterprise Risk Management, Risk Strategy and Insurance, and Administration of the Anonymous Reporting Hotline.

Job Description

Job Summary: Responsible for the identification, evaluation, and protection against key risk exposures at the University, as well as any necessary loss mitigation related to such exposures.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

AsĀ aĀ keyĀ contributorĀ toĀ theĀ University’sĀ riskĀ financingĀ program,Ā theĀ ProgramĀ ManagerĀ isĀ a key player inĀ the procurement and administration of the university’s casualtyĀ insurance and self-insured programs. Supporting the department’s consultative approach, the candidate should expect to regularly interact with internal clients and partners to holistically assess and addressĀ riskĀ throughĀ aĀ varietyĀ ofĀ means includingĀ butĀ not limited to contract andĀ policyĀ reviews, on-siteĀ meetingsĀ and assessments as well as interviews and research. The position partners with the claims manager and Office of General Counsel on claims and coverage issues.Ā The position may also be called upon to recommend solutions for addressingĀ business risk based on objective consultation with experts,Ā researchĀ and analysis. The position requires the ability to aggregate data and synthesize key themes for reporting toĀ the team and the director.Ā The ProgramĀ Manager willĀ be responsible forĀ managing external service partners toĀ optimizeĀ performance and the quality and timeliness of deliverables.

Typical Duties:

  • ContinuallyĀ evaluateĀ currentĀ suiteĀ ofĀ riskĀ financingĀ solutionsĀ andĀ underlyingĀ framework to ensure alignment with university’s exposures, aggregate risk appetite, and specific goals andĀ tolerances.
  • MaintainĀ fluencyĀ inĀ theĀ stateĀ ofĀ theĀ insuranceĀ marketĀ asĀ wellĀ asĀ changingĀ orĀ emerging risk issues and their impact to theĀ university.
  • Maintain general fluency in the legal, regulatory and governance environments impacting higher education
  • ProvideĀ appropriateĀ reportsĀ toĀ guideĀ leadershipĀ onĀ policyĀ renewalĀ strategies,Ā design specifications, and implementation timelines as well as financial analysis andĀ comparisons.
  • ManageĀ external service partners inĀ timelyĀ delivery of quality workĀ productĀ at agreed financialĀ targets.
  • MaintainĀ professionalĀ workingĀ relationshipsĀ withĀ representativesĀ to maximize performance.
  • Periodically measure and report on expected deliverables against established performance metrics as part of regular oversightĀ duties.
  • AnalyzeĀ exposureĀ dataĀ andĀ historicalĀ lossĀ informationĀ toĀ assessĀ trendsĀ andĀ identifyĀ opportunities forĀ improvement.
  • In consultation with the team and the Director, provide timely and practical guidance to internal clients’ on-demand insurance inquiries as needed.
  • ContributeĀ toĀ theĀ department’sĀ annualĀ budgetĀ projectionsĀ andĀ interimĀ financialĀ reports.
  • ParticipateĀ inĀ claimsĀ managementĀ withĀ internalĀ andĀ externalĀ partners.
  • PerformĀ other relatedĀ duties asĀ required.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 7 years’ relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications:Ā Certificates and Licenses:

  • Associate in Risk Management (ARM) or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) preferred

Working Conditions:
Onsite work is performed in an office setting.

Standard Hours/Schedule: 35 hours per week

Work Format Details

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
