This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement, this full-time continuing position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page and annual salary range of $64,206 to $107,006.

Location - Work primarily takes place at North Campus.

Position

Reporting to the Associate Vice President (Research Development and Services), this position is accountable for the development and implementation of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) programs and services. The position ensures that VPRI incorporates EDI perspectives into the work of researchers, staff and faculty; and meets EDI requirements of Tri-Agency funding programs and other sponsors. The position ensures that institutional initiatives are implemented in a way that supports the strategic direction of the University and supports strategic direction arising from the institutional EDI action plan.

Responsibilities include:

Initiatives Development and Support:

  • Engages and works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and others on EDI initiatives related to the University of Alberta’s research enterprise
  • Provides strategic direction and data analysis for the development and implementation for EDI programs and services to enhance EDI in research
  • Actively collaborates with the Office of the Vice Provost (VPEDI) in the development of strategic EDI initiatives related to research and other scholarly activities
  • Support coordination and alignment of EDI training related to research and other scholarship activities with programs offered by VPEDI, Colleges, and Faculties.
  • Conducts research and analysis of EDI issues to inform EDI program and service development and support EDI in research related objectives in Forward with Purpose, the University of Alberta’s Strategic Plan for Research and Innovation
  • Provides recommendations and ensures the Vice-President and Senior Administrators receive timely briefing, advice, and plan of actions
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures that support the university’s strategic direction for EDI in research in coordination with VPEDI as well as College and Faculty leadership

Training Development and Implementation:

  • Develops, organizes and delivers training on EDI for researchers to support them in meeting existing and emerging EDI requirements within the Tri-Agency funding programs and requirements from other sponsors (such as CRC, CERC, CFI, CFREF, provincial and international competitions, etc.)
  • Develops and maintains resources and training materials for researchers
  • Provides portfolio-specific training for VPRI staff related to their broad areas of work that helps them integrate EDI principles into their work and their interactions within the University and the broader community
  • Works with communications staff to ensure EDI resources are easily accessible to staff, faculty, researchers, other stakeholders, and the public.

Community Engagement and Support:

  • Develops and supports relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Facilitates communication and engagement events with internal and external stakeholders
  • Manages information collection and engagement information to support the University’s vision for EDI
  • Keeps informed about funding, partnerships, and relevant events across the institution, provincially and nationally to identify opportunities to further the vision of EDI
  • Develops protocols for community engagement; advises on appropriate protocols to foster relationships with Indigenous and equity-denied communities
  • Seeks and provides opportunities for connecting Indigenous and equity-denied communities with opportunities for success

Special Project Management:

  • Leads, manages and supervises projects
  • Provides project management support for EDI initiatives
  • Tracks project progress and resolves setbacks
  • Ensures appropriate protocols are followed and ensures projects meet required outcomes
  • Measures project performance against objectives

Knowledge and Experience

  • Completion of a relevant University degree - graduate degree preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years progressively responsible administrative experience
  • Personal experience with diverse groups of individuals, people and organizations
  • Broad and substantive experience in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and ability to speak with authority and expertise on principles and practices related to EDI
  • Cultural sensitivity, tact and diplomacy
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of University policies, administrative and governance processes and academic programs
  • Experience managing complex projects
  • Strong communication skills
