The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) – Institute for Human Computing (IHC) is currently recruiting a Senior Health Services Research Programmer.

The UM-IHC is a collaborative initiative of the University of Maryland Baltimore, the University of Maryland College Park, and the University of Maryland Medical System, founded with generous funding from Montgomery County and the State of Maryland's MPower initiative. Based in North Bethesda, MD, the IHC optimizes computational and analytical methods to build a learning health system for improving the health and quality of life of the citizens of Maryland. Key focuses of the Institute include population health, clinical trial innovation, health informatics, artificial intelligence, therapeutic target discovery, and immersive visualization.

UMB is a public university and constituent institution of the University System of Maryland. All employees are expected to work primarily physically within the State of Maryland.

Primary Duties:

  • Serve as an active team participant to provide analytic SAS or SQL (or STATA or R) programming support on research studies.
  • Create, manage, and analyze very large and complex data files using SAS or SQL.
  • Assist with the development, documentation, and implementation of appropriate data flow diagrams, and documents all process flows.
  • Serve as a quality control reviewer of other team members' SAS or SQL programs.
  • Produce study-related outputs for use in publications, posters, or presentations.
  • Design database systems and programs for non-research purposes such as file structures, validation checks, statistical methods, and security.
  • Train data users on new or updated procedures. Users may include graduate students, fellows, staff, and faculty.
  • Advise on variable creation feasibility and approaches.
  • Serve as a subject matter and technical expert to identify and define research questions and data elements.
  • Assist in the integration of data elements into the research design.
  • Lead the development and formulate best practices and protocols on data collection, data quality, warehousing, analysis, and reporting including developing special forms and/or formats for analyzing and presenting data.
  • Utilize knowledge of R and/or other statistical packages such as STATA for programming or research purposes relevant to work performed.
  • Clean, validate, and analyze research data to prepare research findings for peer reviewed publications, grant proposals, and other deliverables.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

Education: Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Health Services Research, Health Science, Statistics, Information Management, Social Science, Public Policy, Mathematics, or a related field.

Experience: Four (4) years of experience in programming utilization with SAS, R, STATA, SQL, or related statistical applications and languages. Prior experience using diagnostic, procedural and drug codes (e.g., ICD-9, ICD-10, HCPCS, CPT and NDCs) is preferred.

Supervisory Experience: N/A.

Certification/Licensure: SAS certification preferred.

Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

Hiring Range: $90,000 - $100,000, Commensurate with education and experience
