Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to provide an effective and efficient link between the University Community and the University Police Department’s operations and services 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. This position provides protective, security, enforcement and public contact work in support of campus operations. Positions at this level perform technical security and enforcement work. Positions work independently while reporting to supervisor on a regular basis, demonstrating full knowledge of rules, regulations, and procedures applicable to area of work.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of the Police & Public Safety department is to support the University’s core mission of teaching, research, and public service by providing comprehensive and professional public safety services as well as secure, convenient access to the NC A&T campus. The department protects and serves the University community by enforcing the laws of North Carolina, preserving and optimizing resources and by maintaining an environment that fosters education and community- oriented service.
Work Hours
Sunday through Saturday, 10 hour shifts, 40 hours a week. Positions may require shift, weekend, and/or overtime work.
Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies
Required Competency: Knowledge - Technical
Conducts self-initiated security checks to protect people and property with continuous foot patrols. Monitors all activities within the Residence Halls, Library, Food Court, and Athletic Facilities. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the interior and exterior layout of the campus, alarm and fire detection systems. Assists students, employees and visitors with questions or concerns. Report, document and resolve security issues, safety concerns and/or hazards. Complies with departmental policies, procedures and General Orders. Completes tasks and duty assignments, volunteers for overtime assignments, and learns the roles of significant University functions (Student Life, Housing, Facilities). Understands protective, security, and enforcement practices. Applies knowledge and skill in basic first aid. Applies considerable knowledge of property security and enforcement procedures. Demonstrates proficiency in using a variety of security and enforcement equipment, which may include parking meters, vehicle boots, gates, alarm panels, radios, cameras, and electronic ticketing devices. Uses the full functionality of security/surveillance systems. Applies thorough knowledge of the policies, rules, and regulations applicable to the property being guarded, sufficient to explain, apply, and enforce the policies, rules, and regulations. Displays organizational awareness and working knowledge of the infrastructure of the assigned area.
Required Competency: Communication
Uses knowledge of radio procedures (10 codes, clearance codes, signal codes), provides complete and detail written documentation and explains required actions to victims, witnesses, detainees, and other officers. Evaluates emergencies immediately and relays emergency information clearly and properly to dispatchers. Communicates regarding issues that require some judgment or interpretation. Explains policies, rules, and regulations with tact and courtesy. Completes reports. Interacts with co-workers, supervisors, emergency response personnel, university officials, and the general public to provide assistance and relay information.
Required Competency: Security, Patrol, & Enforcement
Patrols, monitors, and guards assigned area with a higher assessed risk than the Contributing level. Recognizes, identifies, and reports unusual, suspect, or hazardous activities or conditions. Assists in emergency response. Provides support for special events. Controls and directs traffic of people and vehicles. Erects barricades. Assist at University events by collaborating with event staff and law enforcement to coordinate security efforts and resolve any issues that arise.
Required Competency: Decision Making
Identifies problems/concerns and quickly take appropriate action consistent with available facts, constraints, and anticipated consequences. Analyzes situations in order to make quick, sound decisions. Recognizes critical incidents. Initiates action based upon acquired information and knowledge of operating procedures.
