Job Summary
This is a 0.5 FTE (20 hours per week) day shift position, Monday-Friday in the Office of Surgical Education. There may be occasional weekend or evening shifts required. This position works closely with the Nurse Educator and Director of Surgical Simulation to provide comprehensive education to trainees within the Department of Surgery and Medical Students. This role will assist in delivering training in a variety of settings: simulation lab, tissue lab and classroom.
Presents curricula, assembles presentations, prepares materials and supports or facilitates classes, workshops, seminars and other training services. May assist with program implementation, budget, administration and reporting.
Day-to-day activities consist of coordinating, facilitating, and delivering educational programs and managing assessment data as well as maintenance of the simulation lab.
As an Accredited Educational Institution with the American College of Surgeons our goals are to identify, develop and promote standards for quality education, using appropriate curricula and assessment tools. This role will assist in ensuring these standards are met.
Responsibilities
Job duties - Candidates will be required to perform or assist with listed job duties.
Scheduling/Access:
- Schedules room use: Makes room requests, issues confirmations, makes cancellations
- Facility Access: Functions as a liaison between department educator and Facilities Management to grant/terminate access to the lab
Lab Maintenance:
- Supplies & Equipment: Keep current inventory of what is available in the skills lab. Maintain equipment within the lab: Contact support when notified that equipment does not work, Meet with repair technicians, Monitor/maintain equipment warranties
- Maintain lab facility: Places requests with housekeeping for needed service, Ensures garbage is taken out, instruments are washed and restocked after skills labs, equipment used from library is replaced to original state
- Manage log-in/access to simulators: Works with department educator to create individual access to appropriate simulators for trainees
- Other duties as assigned
Communication & customer service:
Onsite point of contact during lab activities (during/after/weekend hours) to ensure safety of equipment, door access, any on-site needs from all vendors and guests as they come in (i.e. questions about food/parking)
- Assists vendors with arrangements of specialized equipment, including cadavers
- Works with vendors to ensure equipment is safely delivered prior to lab and returned after lab (coordinates pick up with different delivery services such as FedEx/UPS/private delivery companies)
- Communicates regularly with hospital dock, library dock and EHSEB dock to ensure access and any other unique equipment delivery needs
Paperwork/record maintenance
- Maintains records of activities that take place within the lab
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.
- Daily activities vary from sedentary to work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects. Required to walk and transport heavy items between buildings.
- May need to drive to different locations on campus
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Must possess and demonstrate a high level of computer skills, including Microsoft office 365: Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, as well as online surveys and data collection tools
- Excellent customer service skills
- Ability to remain calm, think outside the box, stay flexible and creatively solve problems
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work with department education representatives
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills
- Experience in coordination of resources
- Must be able to assist in coordinating educational activities; preparing, and cleaning up. Classes may involve animal and cadaveric tissue.
Minimum Qualifications
Required: Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire. Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah. Preferred: Some positions may require additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within one year of hire. This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
