Job Summary

The incumbent participates in the preventative dental care of patients by performing oral health assessments and charting, completing dental prophylaxis, providing oral cancer screening, applying topical fluorides, examining teeth, instructing patients on proper dental care, and performing procedures in compliance with the Utah Dental Practice Act.

This position will support school-based oral health initiatives including participating in planning and execution of dental screenings and oral health presentations at elementary and high schools.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  1. Sets up instruments and other equipment.
  2. Assess the oral health of patients and report findings to dentists
  3. Educate patients on proper dental hygiene care and nutrition.
  4. Remove calculus deposits, stains, and biofilm from teeth.
  5. Apply sealants and fluoride treatments.
  6. Perform necessary treatments and procedures within their scope to improve the periodontal health of patients.
  7. Assist in Panoramic and digital radiography and 3D imaging techniques.
  8. Document patient care and treatment plans in Epic.
  9. Clean and sterilize instruments and equipment.
  10. Participate in staff and assigned committee meetings.
  11. Collaborate with community partners to organize and execute oral health outreach events.
  12. Complete tracking of community outreach for grant reports and other reporting requirements.

Problem Solving: Demonstrated leadership, human relations, and effective communication skills. Ability to function during regularly scheduled shifts. Ability to display mental and emotional stamina in situations dealing with multiple patients, family members, etc. Demonstrated ability to function calmly and competently in high stress situations. Ability to deal with the hazards involved in assessing and providing care to patients.

Comments: This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting that may exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving patients or objects, such as medical equipment, while providing patient care. The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his or her assigned department. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual. The staff member must be willing to learn practice management systems, particularly Epic Wisdom and Romexis.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of an approved dental hygiene program or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card or obtained within one month of hire.

Current license to practice as a Dental Hygienist in the State of Utah.

Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.
