Psychiatrist, Clinical Assistant Professor, Psychiatry, Adult, Child, & Adolescent Outpatient (OPD)

Stony Brook University is undergoing significant growth, and our outpatient Psychiatry program is expanding to meet the increasing demand for psychiatric care for young adults and pediatric patients in the community. We are seeking individuals who are eager to embrace the challenge and satisfaction of working with a dynamic team of clinicians, educators, and researchers. Our goal is to enhance the range of services provided to patients, families and communities, and we welcome motivated individuals to join our efforts.

The Clinical Assistant Professor will serve as an Attending Psychiatrist providing care to children, adolescents and young adults in need of both urgent and routine care. Primary responsibilities will include conducting psychiatric evaluations for individuals presenting in immediate psychiatric distress, as well as routine psychiatric evaluations. The role also involves managing short-term treatment interventions, offering school consultations, delivering professional development for school personnel, and acting as a liaison between the clinic, community, and local school districts. Additionally, this position will play a critical role in integrating education and clinical care for young adult and pediatric patients.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting diagnostic evaluations and providing short-term psychiatric care for children, adolescents and young adults in an outpatient setting.
  • Collaborating with local school districts to provide consultation, ensuring integration of educational and clinical efforts for students.
  • Interfacing with leadership and interdisciplinary team daily to ensure success of the program and services.
  • Teaching and supervising medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Opportunities for clinical research in psychiatric inpatient and outpatient treatment are also available.

Schedule:

Full-time position, totaling 40 hours per week. The anticipated schedule allows for approximately 80% of the time dedicated to clinical care, and 20% liaising with schools, communities and families.

The position is Monday through Friday with varying hours during the day shift. The position requires local travel between locations, some on the East End of Long Island, and some hours can be conducted remotely. Some urgent or emergent evaluations will be conducted virtually during scheduled shifts.

Required Qualifications: Psychiatry MD/DO degree (or foreign equivalent). Board Certification or Eligibility in General Psychiatry. Eligibility for New York State medical licensure. Comfort conducting psychiatric evaluations in-person and through a virtual platform.

Preferred Qualifications: Board Certification or Eligibility in Child and Adolescent General Psychiatry. Clinical experience in a Psychiatric Emergency setting or Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Program, including school consultation. Clinical experience working with patients with Substance Use Disorders. Strong interest or proven track record in research related to young adults, child and adolescent psychiatry. Strong communication skills, personable approach, and ability to interact with patients, families and school personnel on a daily basis. Flexible approach to meeting the changing needs of youth and young adults in our communities. Teaching experience.
