Offer Description
The Research Unit of the University of the Aegean seeks to appoint a Recognized Researcher (R2-PhD holder) in Computer Science and IT applications design and development. The successful candidate will be required to conduct in-depth research on the EUDI Wallet technologies and applications in the travel and financial sectors.
The selected individual will participate in a project co-funded by the EU Digital Europe Programme named APTITUDE (Advanced Project for Trusted Identity Technologies and Unified Digital Ecosystem), GA 101223990, which has started in October 2025 - https://aptitude.digital-identity-wallet.eu/ (affiliation with the UAegean Information Management Lab | UAegean i4m Lab).
The work of the selected applicant will be supervised by Petros Kavassalis (Dpt of Financial and Management Engineering - School of Engineering), Associate Professor and Director of i4m Lab. (https://www.fme.aegean.gr/en/p/kavassalis-petros).
About the project
The APTITUDE is a joint effort to successfully leverage the benefits of the emerging EU Digital identity and the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW) in the production system. The APTITUDE project builds on the EUDIW Architecture Reference Framework and the associated Technical Specifications to contribute to the technical foundations (via technical specifications) and create applications implementing a trusted and user-friendly ecosystem for digital identity (via Use Cases and Pilot applications development), enabling European interoperability of digital services and access across borders.
Main Use Cases addressed by the Project (related to UAegean i4m Lab’s work)
- Smart Ticketing & Check-in: a single, trusted tool for booking and checking into travel, with discounts integrated for students and other groups (WP4)
- Mobile Vehicle Registration Certificate (mVRC): a digital car registration that can be shared instantly with third parties across Europe (WP5)
- Payments with Strong Customer Authentication (SCA): safer and simpler online transactions, fully aligned with European standards (WP6)
About the UAegean i4m Lab
i4m Lab is a research activity within the Engineering School of the University of the Aegean, Greece (Dpt of Financial and Management Engineering). i4M Lab Research focuses on the design, development, management and use of Information Technology (IT) and IT-based Service Systems in modern organizations, in both industry value chains/value systems and government agencies. The most recent work includes specific applications: Business Process Modeling and Automation, Service Systems Modeling and Engineering, e-Identity and Privacy Management, Self-Sovereign Identity and Distributed Ledger Technologies, Product Traceability and Intelligent Transportation Systems, Data-driven Applications in general, Economics and Management of Technical Change and IT Innovation and Public Policies in the Digital Era. The Lab is factored to foster links with the industry and the government, to act as an intermediary platform between faculty and students interested in the above issues and industry, research and government bodies.
Position Description
We are seeking a Recognized Researcher (R2-PhD holder) with experience in Information and Identity Management Systems, data-driven and AI applications and the interest in contributing to the development of the emerging EU Digital Identity Technologies. She/he will have the opportunity to:
- Become a key member of a European project implementing state-of-the-art Identity Management solutions, following the guidelines of the EUDI Architecture Reference Framework, specifically in the domains of Travel (Seamless Digital Traveller Experience) and Digital Payments (EUDI Wallet Payments based in Technical Specification TS12).
- Explore and improve existing best practices and standards around the issuance and verification of Electronic Attribute Attestations and Qualified Electronic Attribute Attestations (as specified by the eIDAS 2.0 regulation and the EUDI ARF) in the above domains.
- Participate in designing user journeys and workflows and in developing innovative technologies and solutions for EUDI Wallet-stored identity and biometric credentials for travelers, as well as Digital Payment Credentials and merchant-initiated digital payments, while bridging design verification gaps with formal verification.
- Participate in a large European Research project, coordinate tasks and collaborate with project partners (the APTITUDE consortium brings together 117 public and private partners from 12 European countries), organize technical meetings and work within multinational teams, and write technical documentation and deliverables

Contract Duration
Twelve months, with the possibility of extension according to the project needs.
Work location
The selected candidate will offer services as needed at University facilities, upon agreement with the supervisor (Principal Investigator). The project requires, however, frequent online participation in project and Lab meetings.
Allocated budget
Range of hourly rate: 22 – 34 euros/hour. Depends on experience and qualifications (incl. tax and social security). The maximum allocated budget is € 30.000,00 (gross, including tax and social security contributions).

Selection process
The assessment of the curriculum evaluation will be based on the documents applicants will provide. In case an interview is needed, applicants will be invited to participate via teleconference.
The selection criteria for candidates will take into account their qualifications and previous research experience, including qualifications and experience obtained in non-standard and informal ways (as presented in the submitted application documents). UAegean focuses on cultivating a research community that advances gender equality, ends all forms of discrimination, and empowers women researchers.
Applications will be evaluated by an Evaluation Committee composed of three (3) UAegean professors from different academic departments (gender balanced, chaired by the project’s Principal Investigator). Applicants that do not fulfill the required qualifications will be excluded from the evaluation process.
After evaluation, applicants will receive a notification email with a short summary of the evaluation report. Applicants who were not selected have the right to appeal the selection decision, by addressing their written objection to the University of the Aegean Research Unit Secretariat within five days from the notification date (via email sent to rcs@aegean.gr). The permanent Committee for Appeals and Objections, which is supported by a member of the UAegean RU Secretariat, will review the process and issue advice to the UAegean Research Committee on letters of objection submitted by the non-selected applicants. The Research Committee will receive the advice of the Committee for Appeals and Objections and take a decision on the objection (process defined by the Greek Law, 4957/2022, article 245).
