Established

With a history of over 70 years, HMU is the only public medical university in Hainan, China’s newly announced Free Trade Port.

Faculty

About 1100 faculty members and more than 9000 staff members in affiliated hospitals. Seven academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and three Yangtze River Scholars, and 30 experts with special allowances from the State Council have workstations in HMU.

Students

A home to about 13,000 full-time undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, including international students from more than 30 countries.

HMU is made up of 16 degree-granting schools that offer graduate, undergraduate, and professional programs in Medicine, Science, Engineering, and Management, covering 27 majors including Preclinical Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Biology, etc. It has four first-class affiliated hospitals, with over 7,800 beds. It also has 24 research centers/institutes, academies, and laboratories, including Hainan Provincial Academy of Medical Sciences, Hainan Tropical Medicine Research Institute, MOEKey Laboratory of Emergency and Trauma, MOE Key Laboratory of Tropical Translational Medicine Research, Island Emergency Medicine Innovation Unit, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, National Technical Platform for Clinical Evaluation of New Drugs.

Achievements

In 2018, disciplines of the School of Clinical Medicine became the first in Hainan Province to be ranked among the top 1% of global Essential Science Indicators (ESI) discipline ranking. Its two peer-reviewed journals, Asia Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine and Asia Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine have an impact factor of 1.772 and 1.587 respectively.

Partnerships and Professional Collaboration Platforms

HMU has established close partnerships with the University of Hong Kong, the University of Nebraska, the United States, and School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. HMUoffers good scientific research and academic exchange platforms. Academicians from Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering have workstations in HMU. It also collaborates with the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, USA to establish Global Center for Aging and Cancer Research.
