Rector
The University of Porto (Portugal) announces an opening for Rector, for a four-year term (2026-2030).
The Rector is the highest authority of the University of Porto’s governance and its top external representative, and chairs both the Management Board and the Senate.
The Rector is elected by the General Board for a four-year term, carrying out his or her duties on a full-time and exclusive basis.
Professors or PhD researchers from this University or other institutions, whether national or foreign, involved in university teaching or research, may apply for the position of Rector of the University of Porto.
The following individuals may not be elected Rector:
- Anyone who holds retired status;
- Anyone who has been convicted of a disciplinary, financial or criminal offence in the exercise of public or professional duties, in the four years following the completion of their sentence;
- Anyone who falls under other grounds for ineligibility established by law.
The candidate for Rector must:
- Be a person of recognised merit with professional experience relevant to the duties to be performed;
- Possess a strategic vision appropriate to the pursuit of the mission and aims of the University of Porto, in accordance with its statutes;
- Have demonstrated the ability to promote humanistic and scientific values in an environment of collegiality and inclusion.
Applications shall be submitted by the candidates themselves to the Chairman of the General Board within 30 consecutive days after the publication of the notice on the University's website, in digital format, and must be accompanied by the following documents:
- Cover letter from the candidate with their personal details and contact information, including an email address specifically designated for receiving notifications related to the electoral process;
- Detailed curriculum vitae of the candidate, dated and signed, accompanied by relevant documents for the evaluation of the merit of the application, namely indicating the management positions held at universities or other organisations;
- A declaration of honour by the candidate stating that they are not subject to any of the situations of ineligibility or incompatibility provided for by law and in the Statutes of the University of Porto;
- The action programme to be implemented during the four-year term of office, written in Portuguese or English.
