FT/PT: Full-time
Pay Plan: This is a 10/12 pay-plan designated position. Employees appointed on this 10/12 pay-plan position work 10 months of the year and receive the months of June and July off. Employees are paid an amount equal to 10 months' salary over a period of twelve months.
Workplace Type: On-site (work in-person at business location)
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,862 - $5,833 (However, offer amount will be commensurate with candidate's experience, education, skills, and training.)
CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,633 - $7,011

Position Purpose: The mission of the Student Health Services is to build a healthy campus community by providing quality, caring, cost effective ambulatory healthcare and health promotion services. As part of an institution of higher learning, the Student Health Services participates in the educational process by teaching students the skills for self-care, promoting their health, advocating for themselves, and preventing diseases thus enhancing their academic productivity leading to a satisfying college experience. Services provided by CSU student health centers include, but are not limited to, primary medical care, counseling and psychological services, and sexual health education and support including provision of medication abortion services.
Under the general direction of the Director of Student Health Services, the Registered Dietitian is responsible for the development, coordination, and implementation of comprehensive nutrition education and dietary programs aimed at improving student health and wellness. The position provides individualized and group-based nutritional counseling, conducts educational outreach and workshops, and collaborates with campus and community partners to promote healthy dietary practices. The Registered Dietitian applies expert knowledge in nutritional science to assess student needs, design targeted interventions, and evaluate the impact of programs through data analysis and assessment tools. The role supports the overall mission of Student Health Services by fostering a holistic, inclusive, and prevention-focused approach to student well-being.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Outreach & Education
- Design and implement engaging nutrition and health outreach programs that reflect the evolving needs of college students.
- Collaborate with on- and off-campus partners (e.g., Housing, Counseling Center, Athletics, Essential Needs, local agencies) to broaden the scope and reach of educational efforts.
- Develop original health and nutrition content for digital platforms, including the SHS website and social media channels, tailored to student interests and seasonal topics.
- Create visually appealing educational materials for display within the Student Health Center and use at outreach events and health fairs.
- Maintain and regularly update an inventory of educational resources, including print and multimedia materials, for individual, group, and waiting area use.
- Develop strategies to market outreach efforts effectively across campus using a variety of media channels.
- Individual & Group Counseling
- Provide individualized nutrition counseling to students, addressing issues such as dietary improvement, chronic disease management, food allergies, and disordered eating.
- Support students referred by healthcare providers, mental health counselors, or other campus departments with targeted nutritional care plans.
- Document all counseling sessions in the electronic medical record system in accordance with HIPAA and SHS protocols.
- Plan and lead group nutrition counseling sessions and topic-specific workshops (e.g., intuitive eating, plant-based diets, weight management).
- Collaborate with the Counseling Center to co-facilitate psychoeducational groups addressing the intersection of nutrition and mental health (e.g., emotional eating, body image).
- Maintain a referral network within SHS and across campus (e.g., Athletics, Housing, Essential Needs, Student Recreation Center) to ensure coordinated care.
- Presentations & Special Events
- Deliver educational presentations on a broad range of nutrition-related topics in response to classroom and departmental requests.
- Develop and conduct workshops and seminars that address student concerns such as meal planning, weight management, food budgeting, and special dietary needs.
- Represent Student Health Services at campus events, including new student orientation, resource fairs, and wellness initiatives.
- Collaborate with departments such as Athletics, Student Housing, and the Student Recreation Center to offer workshops on topics including performance nutrition, mindful eating, and balanced lifestyles.
- Partner with campus groups such as Food Services, Edible Garden, and the Food Pantry to workshops, demonstrations, and special events.
- Assessment & Evaluation
- Design and administer assessment tools (e.g., surveys, focus groups) to evaluate the effectiveness and learning outcomes of outreach efforts and presentations.
- Collect and analyze student feedback to inform continuous improvement of services.
- Conduct national benchmark assessments as appropriate (e.g., NCHA, Healthy Minds Study).
- Prepare Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions for research or evaluation projects involving human subjects.
- Produce summary reports documenting program outcomes, needs assessments, and future planning strategies.
- Peer Education & Internship
- Provide training and oversight for student peer health educators on nutrition-related topics and group facilitation techniques.
- Collaborate with peer educators in the delivery of workshops, outreach, and tabling events.
- Provide daily lead direction and mentor undergraduate and graduate student interns in health promotion, public health, or dietetics programs.
- Serve on the Student Health Advisory Committee, supporting student involvement in health initiatives.
Required Qualifications:
Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a program approved and accredited by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The RD credential also requires completion of an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics accredited preprofessional experience program. Additionally, incumbents must possess sufficient experience to perform the assigned duties.
Licenses: Possess and maintain certification as a Registered Dietitian as defined by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: (Various skills listed in the text)
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in Nutrition, Public Health, Health Education or related field; Three (3) years of experience providing nutrition counseling in a college health, public health, or outpatient clinical setting; etc.
Physical Demands: Sedentary work - involves mainly sitting; minimal walking and standing; lifting light weight objects limited to 15 pounds.
Special Conditions: Background check required; Mandated reporter under California law; etc.
