REGISTERED NURSE (Mott Childrens Hospital- Brandon Neonatal ICU)
The Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the University of Michigan is a 59 bed Level IV neonatal center serving our region, state and beyond. We remain one of the state's leading referral centers for premature newborns and infants with complex medical problems, complex surgical problems or unusual anomalies, need for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, and whole body or selective head cooling for hypothermic neuroprotection.
About 80% of the Newborn ICU admissions are inborn and 20% are transported from our referral region and state. We offer 24/7 neonatal transport services with Newborn ICU RNs as members of the transport team.
Our specialized nursing team members provide quality nursing care to newborns from the acute phase of illness through recovery. A family-centered approach to care is practiced in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit.
We provide individualized support and education to families during hospitalization and in preparation for discharge. We empower families to participate in decision making for and in the care of their child.
Required Qualifications:
- Current unrestricted RN licensure to practice nursing in Michigan.
- Minimum 1-year current Neonatal Intensive Care.
- or Minimum 2 years current pediatric RN experience.
- or Minimum 3 years current critical care experience.
- or Minimum 3 years current labor and delivery experience with high-risk deliveries.

- Ability to remain flexible in response to the rapidly changing clinical environment.
- Demonstrated ability to manage conflict and accept feedback.
- Demonstrated understanding of complex neonatal patient population.
- Demonstrated complex problem-solving ability and effective communication
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team atmosphere utilizing effective delegation skills.
A shadow of the clinical environment is required as part of the interview process.

Preferred Qualifications:
- BSN
- Recent level IV NICU nursing experience or complex pediatric experience.
- ECMO training, including neonates.
- Critical Care or pertinent clinical certification in area of experience.
- Experience in unit-level leadership or committee roles (charge nurse, UBC, WRC)
- Demonstrated understanding of the scope of a Level IV NICU.
- Critical care transport experience, including that of neonates.
- Complex vascular access/PICC placement experience.
- Bedside OR experience.
- Experience using EPIC code narrator.
- Familiarity with multi-modal respiratory support including high frequency ventilation.
Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
This UMPNC RN posting is posted as Nursing Framework LEVEL C.
Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level F.
Required qualifications must be met by the candidate in order to be interviewed and considered for the position. Posting may be filled after the initial 5-day posting period. Applicants who have left the UMPNC bargaining unit must include on their resume dates of past employment including months and years of service along with effort. Positions less than 20 hours/week may be combined.
Hours Per Week: 32 hours
Shift/Hours/Days: Evening shift-8 hour shifts; Monday through Friday with rotating weekends. Other shift patterns may be available.
Location: 8 West, Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit
All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
