"Regius Professorship of Mathematics"

The Mathematical Institute and Merton College are seeking applications for the Regius Professorship of Mathematics, with effect from 1 October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The professorship will become available on the retirement of the inaugural postholder, Professor Sir Andrew Wiles FRS.

We are looking to appoint a research mathematician of the highest international calibre who will contribute to the department’s teaching, and exercise broad leadership to influence the department’s academic direction and governance generally. The Regius Professor will also hold a Professorial Fellowship at Merton College and take part in the governance, intellectual life and activities of the College.

You should have a proven record of original fundamental mathematics research and of securing research funding. You should be able to demonstrate the ability to provide research leadership and to contribute to setting academic and strategic direction, including beyond the area of your own speciaility. You should be able to provide evidence of effective and innovative teaching, including lectures and graduate supervision.

The closing date for applications is 12:00 noon UK time on Monday 12 January 2026. Interviews are expected to be held in February or March 2026.
