Offer Description
Under the European Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR), European Union member states have until 2040 to document the condition of all terrestrial, coastal and freshwater habitats listed under Annex I of the Habitats Directive. In this context, the French Biodiversity Office (OFB) has launched several programs, including the one proposed here, with the participation of national institutions. The CarHab program will be one of the key tools for mapping these habitats. However, it has become apparent that CarHab is not sufficiently effective at identifying complex habitats such as scree slopes. We therefore propose to combine the skills and expertise in habitats and remote sensing held by CESBIO and National botanical conservatory of the Pyrenees and Midi-Pyrénées (CBNPMP) to investigate a complementary methodology to better map scree slopes and assess their potential condition (degradation) with the collaboration of the LESSEM (INRAE).
Consequently, the objectives of this study are as follow, order by priority:
- to establish a knowledge database on scree habitats – of which there are five in this study – using existing data (surveys and maps) held by various botanical conservatories and, where possible, through field surveys
- to develop a multi-resolution classification method for the five Annex 1 habitats, using optical satellite imagery and environmental data (topography, geology, etc.)
- to validate the maps through several field trips in different eco-climatic contexts
- to assess, as far as possible, the conservation status of these scree slopes in light of the pressures and recreational activities to which they are subjected

Specific Requirements
CESBIO is identified as a security restrictive zone (ZRR) laboratory. Candidate is required to follow a authorization process to be granted access. He will also required to follow closely the security guidance rules once recruited.
Although the candidate will be administratively attached to CESBIO, he/she will carry out his/her duties at the CBNPMP in Bagnères-de-Bigorre (Hautes-Pyrénées), and will have several interactions with the Lessem (INRAE Grenoble) and PatriNat (OFB-MNHN).
