Department
SSD Institute for Mind and Biology: Staff and Temporary Employees
About the Department
The Institute for Mind and Biology at the University of Chicago enables research answering fundamental questions about the mind and its dynamic interaction with the biological systems of the body. Our researchers seek to understand the relationships between the mind, the brain and the body in health and in disease. Our institute is unique in bringing together a diverse group of researchers who investigate these questions in different model organisms using state of the art techniques. The Brain Bridge Lab deals with the bridge between perception and memory. Specifically, we research questions about the perceptual inputs and outputs of the human memory system.
The Institute for Mind and Biology is comprised of twelve faculty members from the Departments of Comparative Human Development and Psychology. In addition to their department appointments, members contribute significantly to the University's interdisciplinary approach to neuroscience and Committees on Computational Neuroscience, Evolutionary Biology, Integrative Neuroscience, and Neurobiology. Members also collaborate with other faculty at UChicago in the Biological Sciences Division and Division of the Social Sciences as well as colleagues from around the globe.
The Bainbridge Lab research focuses on the cognitive neuroscience of perception and memory, looking at how certain items are intrinsically more memorable than others, and how the brain is sensitive to this information. It also explores the visual content of memories, using drawings and functional MRI to decode memory content.
