Job Description:
The Ahmed-Braimah Lab seeks a Research Analyst (RA) to support a diverse portfolio of research projects focused on evolutionary and functional genomics. They will work closely with the Principal Investigator, graduate students, postdocs, and collaborating laboratories to manage, analyze, and interpret large-scale genomic and transcriptomic datasets. The RA will apply established analytical tools, develop custom pipelines, and create new computational approaches to address cutting-edge biological questions.
Projects involve whole-genome and resequencing analyses, RNA-Seq and single-cell omics, population genomics, regulatory genomics (ATAC-Seq, ChIP-Seq, CUT&RUN), comparative genomics, genome assembly and annotation, CRISPR screens, and computational workflows for evolutionary and functional analyses. This position requires a strong computational background, demonstrated experience with next-generation sequencing analysis, and enthusiasm for collaborative work is preferred. Excellent communication skills and a desire to train junior scientists are essential, as the position includes mentorship and teaching responsibilities.
This position is part of a bargaining unit and is represented by the union SEIU, Local 200United.
Education and Experience:
- M.S. in computer science or a related field, or a Ph.D. in biology with extensive graduate training in computational biology or an equivalent field, as evidenced in published work and/or CV.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Demonstrated experience analyzing high-throughput sequencing datasets.
- Proficiency with scripting languages (e.g., Python, R, Bash).
- Experience working in Linux/Unix environments and with HPC or cloud computing.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
- Effective communication skills and interest in working in a collaborative, interdisciplinary team.
- Experience with workflow managers such as Snakemake, Nextflow, or WDL/Cromwell.
- Familiarity with version control (Git/GitHub) and collaborative software development.
- Background in evolutionary genetics, population genomics, or comparative genomics.
- Experience with genome assembly/annotation, pangenome analysis, or phylogenetics.
- Knowledge of statistical modeling, machine learning, or advanced data visualization.
- Prior mentoring or teaching experience in computational skills.
Responsibilities:
- Perform computational analysis on collaborative research projects.
- Manage, analyze, and interpret large-scale genomic and transcriptomic datasets.
- Apply established analytical tools, develop custom pipelines, and create new computational approaches to address cutting-edge biological questions.
- Train and assist graduate students with bioinformatics projects.
- Maintain lab computing infrastructure.
- Maintain and curate genomics datasets, laboratory software with version control, and manage computing clusters and backup storage.
- Other duties as assigned.
