The Department of Bioengineering is seeking a full-time Research Assistant 2 to support the undergraduate teaching lab.
Main responsibilities include
- Implement and enforce EHS safety guidelines to ensure everyone's safety.
- Set up experiments according to provided protocols or develop protocols for undergraduate or graduate courses; suggest optimizations and recommendations.
- Assist in the preparation of research materials for the teaching lab
- Maintain records, compile, and file data.
- Assist in purchasing equipment and supplies and keep track of lab purchases and needs.
- Oversee installation, maintenance, and operation of equipment and lab-related furniture.
- Monitor and oversee laboratory budgets, prepare reports, work with vendors, and maintain accurate records.
- Prepare and set up materials and equipment using established protocols for a variety of assays, analyses, and tests in preparation for teaching labs.
- Provide guidance to TAs and students during lab sessions.
- Coordinate with McGill services and units to ensure proper function of the lab space (including EHS, facilities…)
- Maintain smooth daily operations of instructional laboratories.
- Promote cleanliness and safety in teaching labs.
Qualifications
- Education; Master’s degree in Science or Engineering (Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biology, chemistry or other related fields)
- Previous experience in a wet laboratory is required.
- knowledge in experimental biology is required
- Above 2 years of experience working in an academic setting supporting relevant research, performing laboratory duties, and/or setting up and maintaining laboratories in the field
- Experience in assisting in research laboratory daily operations in academic environment is an asset,
- Solid knowledge of health and safety aspects
- Knowledge of working in clean environments and awareness of contamination management
- Experience with established methodology in fields such as chemistry, microfabrication, 3D printing, or biosensors and basic engineering principles is required.
- Experience with established methodology in fields such as biology, biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology is an asset.
- Experience with the lab equipment, techniques and software listed below is an asset: Equipment: pipettors, pH meters, BSC, autoclaves, microscopes, spectrophotometers, flow cytometer, potentiostat, thermocycler, Chemidoc, 3D printers, plasma cleaner, mask aligner, PDMS preparation, etc. Techniques: Microfabrication, chemistry, and 3D design. Software: 3D modeling related programs (CAD, FUSION 360, Chitubox, etc.). GLP and/or GMP
Number of hours per week: 40 hours
Physical location might change (Bioengineering teaching lab space at UQAM or McGill as required)
Duration: One year contract renewable
