The AI Institute for Societal Decision Making (AI-SDM) and the Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at CMU is seeking a part-time Research Assistant. The assistant will work closely with AI-SDM leadership and CMU LTI faculty on research initiatives at the intersection of language technology and Indigenous languages.
Core Responsibilities:
- Linguistic Data Annotation: Produce interlinear gloss for Dine/Navajo sentences.
- Cross-Linguistic Comparison: Interact with other native language speakers to compare challenges in morpheme segmentation and interlinear gloss creation.
- Research Collaboration: Engage/consult with linguists as needed for guidance on linguistic analysis and methodology.
- Paper Development: Assist with the final stages of a research paper, including editing, formatting, and content refinement
- Communication: Maintain regular communication with faculty, staff, and students regarding project progress

Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Familiarity with or expertise in the Dine/Navajo language is highly desirable.
- A strong interest in linguistics, language technologies, or computational linguistics.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage variable weekly hours.
- A combination of education and meaningful experience from which comparable knowledge is proven may be considered.
