Research Assistant, Biodiversity
Job Description
Location: St John’s Island National Marine Laboratory (SJINML), Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI)
The Marine Biology and Ecology Group at TMSI in SJINML invites applications for full-time Research Assistants to elucidate marine invertebrate biodiversity of intertidal and subtidal habitats. The contract appointment is initially for one year with the possibility of renewal for a further year. Successful applicants will join an existing team of researchers responsible for establishing high-resolution biological baselines for marine environmental assessment and monitoring.
Key responsibilities
- Sample collection in the field
- Sample sorting/live observations in the laboratory under the microscope
- Sample preservation, identification, curation and database management
- Report writing
- Purchasing of equipment and consumables
- Equipment maintenance and housekeeping
- Management of volunteers
- Ensuring safety of personnel
- Any other duties as and when assigned.
Qualifications
- B.Sc. in Biology or equivalent
- Have an eye for detail
- Be willing to work flexible hours including weekends and public holidays
Candidates with experience in molecular sequencing, as well as collecting and examining small (less than 1 cm) invertebrates is an advantage. They are also expected to be highly motivated and be able to work independently and as a team, to achieve research goals.
