We are seeking a self-motivated, experienced research assistant to join the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Research (CAMHR) at the University of Hull on a fixed term contract until 31-Oct-2029. CAMHR is a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Mental Health Research Group. The successful candidate will become part of a large interdisciplinary team of researchers investigating addiction and mental health conditions. Under the leadership of Professor Thomas Phillips, Professor of Nursing in Addiction and Professor Judith Cohen, Director of Hull Health Trials Unit (HHTU), the team has secured a five-year award, supported by partners at the University of York and King’s College London, to develop addiction and mental health research.

Working closely with health and social care providers, patients and the public, we have developed an ambitious programme of research across three themes:

Theme 1: Improving care pathways and outcomes for young people with substance use and mental health problems

Theme 2:  Improving care pathways for adults with substance use disorder and mental health problems presenting to emergency departments

Theme 3: Defining the needs of adults with alcohol-related cognitive impairment

This post will predominantly provide support to Theme 1 which aims to improve care for young people experiencing substance use and mental health problems. The programme of research incorporates multiple work packages including:

  1. Mapping of current service provision for young people with substance use and mental health problems
  2. An updated rapid scoping review into youth assertive community treatment
  3. Establishment of an expert clinical reference group
  4. Co-design of an integrated intervention service model and conduct a feasibility trial to test the intervention
  5. A qualitative evaluation of:
    1. Acceptability and appropriateness of the intervention to service users
    2. Barriers and facilitators to implementing the intervention from the perspective of staff and service providers

The postholder will support Research Fellows and broader research team through a range of activities, including contribution to systematic and scoping reviews, screening papers and contributing to report writing; supporting development of research projects through assisting with protocol development, seeking regulatory approvals, and contributing to the development of study documents; supporting the delivery of research projects, recruitment of research participants from research sites in Humber and North Yorkshire, taking informed consent, collecting data, and contributing to data analysis and reporting where appropriate.

The postholder may also support the Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement Coordinators to develop and deliver stakeholder networks and lived experience advisory groups.

The ideal candidates will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, knowledge and of conducting literature reviews, experience in delivering clinical research, and experience engaging with vulnerable people in clinical or research settings.

The role is based at the University of Hull who have an agile working policy with some home working permitted, however it is expected that the candidate will work a minimum of 3 days per week in the office. Travel to other locations to support projects may be required.
