Frequently Asked Questions

🎓What qualifications are required for this Research Assistant position?

Candidates should hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in materials science, engineering, or a related field, with a focus on thin film deposition. The posted requirements do not specify a PhD; this is a staff research support role rather than a faculty position. If you are exploring similar openings, browse Research Assistant jobs on AcademicJobs or read how to excel as a Research Assistant. Strong English communication skills and the ability to solve problems independently are also essential.

🔬What will I do day-to-day as a Research Assistant on this project?

You will support a semiconductor materials project by direct growth of multilayer amorphous carbon (MAC) on target substrates using a UV-based CVD approach. Daily tasks include electrical tests of devices, measuring transfer curves of thin-film transistors with amorphous dielectrics, and characterizing materials with Raman spectroscopy, AFM, and SEM. You will also handle data analysis, physical interpretation, and lab safety, equipment maintenance and operations. For context on advanced materials research, see NUS–Toronto Materials Data Foundry Lab.

🧪Is clean room or electronics experience mandatory?

No. First-hand experience with CVD reactors and vacuum systems is required, while experience with electronics and clean room use is desirable rather than mandatory. If you have only academic clean room exposure, you may still be competitive, but candidates who can demonstrate safe, independent equipment operation will stand out. Review broader research jobs to see how similar roles phrase lab-equipment requirements.

📍Where is the role based and what is the lab environment?

The position is located at the Kent Ridge Campus of the National University of Singapore, within the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. You will work in a research lab with CVD reactors, vacuum systems, and characterization instruments, and may need to enter a clean room for sample preparation. The project focuses on ultralow-k dielectrics for semiconductor market leadership. See related materials-science coverage like AI revolution in materials science.

📝How can I make my application stronger for this role?

Tailor your CV to highlight thin film deposition, CVD reactor maintenance, vacuum system operation, and electrical characterization of dielectric materials. Use concrete examples, such as 'operated UV-based CVD for amorphous carbon films' or 'measured transistor transfer curves.' A well-structured academic CV can help; see how to write a winning academic CV. Also mention any clean room or Raman/AFM/SEM experience even if it was part of coursework.

💡What is the research project about?

The position supports the project 'Unlocking Market Leadership in Semiconductors with Multilayer Amorphous Carbon as Ultralow-k Dielectric'. The goal is to develop multilayer amorphous carbon (MAC) films as ultralow-k dielectric layers for advanced semiconductor devices. You will work with Barbaros Oezyilmaz and Dr Toh Chee Tat on lab support, sample preparation and characterization, contributing to materials that can reduce parasitic capacitance and improve device performance.
