Research Assistant I

Position Summary

The Research Assistant I works to support Michigan Pollinator Initiative’s research and extension missions, including works with limited supervision and is responsible for research assistance, as well as developing and disseminating educational materials and providing logistical support for a variety of lab projects and related programs; acting as a resource person to internal and external individuals regarding programs and research; working on field and laboratory research trials for strategies that support honey bee and pollinator health; perform field work, consult with the research supervisor in order to assist in planning and designing experiments, and assist in coordinating field operations in order to meet research goals; participate in grant writing and preparing reports as needed; independent development of web-based and printed deliverables and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholder groups; independently complete many administrative and technical tasks; identifying equipment needs, making purchases, and maintaining field equipment; research literature in order to maintain a current knowledge of laboratory research methods and terminology; and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in entomology, biology, or a related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in standard laboratory procedures and safety requirements and performing analytical and research techniques in honeybee colonies; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job requires maintaining a valid vehicle operator's license at the time of hire.

Desired Qualifications

The applicant must be enthusiastic about outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions. A Master’s degree. Experience managing honey bee colonies and collecting colony health data is highly desired. Lab bench experience, sterile technique is beneficial. Experience managing websites and social media is beneficial. Spanish language skills are a plus.
