Research Assistant in Biostatistics or Epidemiology

Our research is internationally recognized for the development and evaluation of AI for radiological breast cancer diagnostics with recent publications in Nature, Lancet Digital Health, Radiology, MICCAI, among others. Our group has expertise in radiology, biostatistics, and machine and deep learning. We have a strong collaboration with research groups at KTH, and internationally with University of California Berkeley and with University of Barcelona.
We are now looking to recruit a research assistant in biostatistics or epidemiology to perform the tasks below, and to become prepared for a future doctoral study program.
The Project
You will contribute to an ongoing research project examining fairness, equity, and generalizability of clinically used AI systems for mammography-based breast cancer detection and risk prediction. This position is designed as a potential pathway to doctoral studies and is funded by the Swedish Research Council.
The primary focus will be AI model performance evaluation across ethnic and socioeconomic subgroups. Depending on the applicant’s background and interest, there may be an opportunity to fine-tune and de-bias AI models. The aim is both to identify disparities and, where methodologically justified, to evaluate strategies to reduce them while maintaining clinical.
Your mission
Your tasks will include:
- Link our existing retrospective screening mammography with Swedish registries to extract additional information
- Quality check and clean data
- Contribute to the statistical analysis plan
- Perform statistical analyses in R and Python
- Present results in internal meetings, in professional conferences and to other stakeholders
- Publish at least one original research paper
- Participate in our weekly journal clubs discussing scientific papers
- Obtain a scientific foundation to be well prepared for a doctoral study program
Your profile
Qualifications
You should have:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biostatistics or Epidemiology or related field
- Experience with quantitative data analysis and statistical reasoning
- Proficiency in R and Python
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills
It is a merit if you:
- Demonstrate excellent scientific understanding and communication
- Demonstrate excellent ability to effectively participate in scientific project discussions
- Have carried out projects related to cancer screening or radiology
- Have experience in working with medical images in DICOM format
- Have experience extracting data from non-SQL databases, specifically MongoDB
