Research Assistant

Department: School of Business

Vacancy ID: 040523

Closing Date: 26-Apr-2026

Maynooth University is committed to a strategy in which the primary University goals of excellent research and scholarship and outstanding education are interlinked and equally valued.

The International Research on Energy Systems Integration, Education & Environment for Sustainability and Innovation Centre (IRESI), is a research centre housed in the School of Business. IRESI's research focuses on propelling sustainable energy systems into the future by helping individuals, organisations, and institutions in the pursuit of a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable energy landscape.

We are seeking a technically strong and research-driven Research Assistant to join our team and contribute to the NEXSYS project, funded by Research Ireland. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of energy systems innovation, with a particular focus on energy flexibility modelling, urban energy systems, and energy communities. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, development, and implementation of quantitative models and analytical frameworks to assess demand-side flexibility, distributed energy resources, and smart grid integration at building, district, and city scales. The role will involve advanced data analysis, simulation, and optimisation to support the development of scalable and policy-relevant energy solutions.

Working within an interdisciplinary research environment, the appointee will collaborate closely with academic researchers, technical partners, policymakers, and community stakeholders. The position requires strong technical expertise in programming and energy systems modelling, alongside the ability to translate complex analytical outputs into high-quality research deliverables, technical reports, and publications.

In addition to contributing to core modelling and analysis activities, the successful candidate will support the delivery of project milestones and technical work packages, ensuring that outputs meet required quality standards and timelines. The role will directly support the strategic research objectives of IRESI, the School of Business, and Maynooth University in advancing innovation in sustainable urban energy systems and citizen-centred energy transitions.
