About the role
The Biomedical Image Analysis Group, led by Prof Ben Glocker, in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London is seeking a talented Research Assistant / Associate to take a key role in an ambitious new project on the safe deployment of medical imaging AI. The purpose of the role is to conduct world-leading research on AI for medical imaging. The goal is to develop methodologies and computational tools to support the safe and ethical deployment of AI in clinical settings. The research focus is on AI performance monitoring, distribution shift detection, bias assessment, and stress testing. The developed technology will be rooted in causal reasoning, and we envision leveraging causal generative AI methods to develop a rigorous and comprehensive AI testbed. Clinical applications include, but are not limited to, disease detection in chest radiographs and cancer detection in digital mammography.

What you would be doing
The post offers an exciting opportunity for conducting internationally leading research on the whole spectrum of novel machine learning algorithms and practical medical imaging applications, aiming for impact by addressing computational problems and real-world healthcare challenges. The researcher will be responsible for developing and implementing new approaches, testing and evaluating methods on real clinical data, open-sourcing experimental software prototypes, writing scientific papers, and presenting research at the leading international conferences. There will be ample opportunities for national and international collaborations with clinicians, regulators, policymakers, and industry partners.
What we are looking for
You must have a strong background in machine learning, computer vision, and medical image analysis, with publications in leading international conferences/journals. Candidates should have experience in at least one of the following topics:
- Performance monitoring.
- Data distribution shift detection.
- Bias & fairness assessment.
- Stress testing & model robustness.
- Generative imaging models.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant, salary range £43,003 - £46,297 per annum.
