Research Assistant (OR/NBD/SXY)

Job Description

The Signature Research Programme in Neuroscience and Behavioural Disorders (“NBD”) is focused on understanding the structure and function of the nervous system, and the neural mechanisms underlying human neurological, psychiatric and ophthalmological disorders.

The laboratory of Human Neural Models within NBD is looking for a Research Assistant to join the newly established lab at Duke-NUS Medical School. The lab focuses on 1) generating novel human neural models, including 2D neural cultures and 3D brain organoids; 2) utilizing these models to investigate neurodegenerative disorders (such as Parkinson’s disease) and neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders (such as autism).

The selected candidate will perform a variety of research activities which include planning, organising and conducting research studies within the overall scope of a research project under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or his/her designate, including but not limited to the following:

  • Perform tasks and support all aspects of the research project.
  • Conduct accurate monitoring, documenting and reporting of experimental results and/or research findings.
  • Assist researchers in programming, data analysis and literature review in various research projects.
  • Contribute to project management, presentations and publications of research work.
  • Assist with general upkeep of laboratory needs, establish and maintain safety protocols, provide technical support and establish work procedures to ongoing research projects.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described therein.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree with an aptitude for research with at least some relevant research experience. Entry level candidates may also be considered.
  • Prior knowledge of cell culture, neuroscience, immunology, cell biology, imaging and animal work would be advantageous.
  • Possess strong sense of responsibility and a high level of diligence.
  • Must be comfortable in handling human stem cells and animals such as rats and mice.
  • Have strong interpersonal communications skills with excellent written, oral communication and computer skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Have strong organisational skills and prior research laboratory management.
  • A strong team player who is open-minded, energetic, highly motivated and can work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team and diverse workforce.
