Applications are invited for the following full-time position in the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health:

Research Assistant (Pathogen genomics)

The Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (SSHSPH) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is recruiting a full-time Research Assistant (or Associate) to undertake pathogen genomic analysis. The selected candidate will analyse whole-genome sequence data from the parasitic liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini; a significant neglected tropical disease (NTD) within Southeast Asia. There is also the opportunity to contribute to parasitological fieldwork or primary data collection in Thailand or Lao PDR. The role is offered for 12 months in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research, collaborate with experts, and work on other infectious disease analyses. It would be an excellent role for an enthusiastic candidate looking to develop their skills in bioinformatics and evolutionary genomics, with an interest in parasitology, NTDs, and global health. It could also serve as a valuable foundation for candidates planning to apply for PhD programmes in the future.

Job scope:

  • Analyse whole-genome sequences of parasitic organisms and develop or apply evolutionary models.
  • Develop bioinformatic pipelines for next-generation sequence data, including mapping to a reference genome and variant calling.
  • Collaborate with epidemiologists, public health specialists, and parasitologists at NUS and other institutions, particularly in Thailand and Lao PDR.
  • Assist with primary data collection and overseas fieldwork in rural locations, for instance in Thailand or Lao PDR.
  • Review the latest research on parasite biology, pathogen genomics, and evolutionary ecology regularly.
  • Contribute to peer-reviewed publications and other outputs, including as lead author.
  • Contribute to drafting major grant proposals and lead in drafting small grant proposals.
  • Disseminate research findings through presentations at international conferences and meetings with key partners.
  • Contribute to the broader research community through journal and grant reviews.
  • Participate in mandatory NUS training, and keep abreast of advancements in research methods through attending external workshops or training courses.

Requirements:

  • Experience generating and / or analysing genomic sequence data.
  • Strong analytical and data management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and time management.

The following knowledge and experience would be advantageous:

  • Experience with statistical software (e.g., R) and / or programming languages (e.g., Python or Julia).
  • Experience with command line interface (bash / Unix scripting).
  • Experience with molecular biology assays to generate genetic / genomic data.
  • Experience participating in ecological or epidemiological fieldwork or data collection.
  • Experience working, living or travelling in Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand or Lao PDR.

The grade of appointment will be accorded based on candidate’s academic qualifications and years of relevant experience.
